The Most Heartbreaking Scenes In Euphoria Yet | Screen Rant

Content Warning: The following article contains sensitive material, including substance abuse and violence.

Though Euphoria is a wildly popular and beloved series, it's not light or easily digestible media that is easy to consume. The show covers many serious topics, ranging from substance abuse to depression and anxiety.

The HBO series does have its occasionally humorous and lighthearted moments, however, all of the main characters have quite a bit of trauma to unpack. Knowing everything these characters have been through, it's only natural for heartbreaking scenes to exist in the show, with some moments being bleaker than others.

Though season 1 didn't have nearly as many heavy scenes as season 2, the few times it did get unbearably sad were worth remembering. The door scene from "Made You Look" was hard to watch for several reasons, and fans believe that moment alone won Zendaya her Emmy award.

In a time of pure desperation, Rue paid Fez a visit in a last-ditch effort to get drugs, but once he refused, things got ugly. Rue began spiraling and hurling painful insults at Fez, which hurt fans to watch as they came to terms with the severity of Rue's addiction.

Throughout the series, there are quite a few times the funeral flashback is shown, namely Rue's tearful speech. It's no secret that Rue's father's death plays a huge role in her character development and drug addiction, so it's only fitting that the audience gets a preview of her most troubling, innermost thoughts.

Considering the fact that everybody goes through a major loss at some point in their life, the funeral scenes are very heartbreaking to watch, as it's an honest depiction of loss at such a young age. Fans still find the scenes unsettling to watch, especially knowing where her depression ends up taking her.

Fans of the show haven't shied away from their annoyance with Cassie, yet some viewers still feel sorry for her, especially knowing about her troubled upbringing. Though she has trauma from her father and most all of the other men in her life, fans have had enough of her constant excuses and naivety.

Cassie's short-lived "situationship" with Nate has been a rollercoaster, with Cassie making a plethora of poor decisions in an effort to keep his attention. However, despite how fans may feel about her, it was quite heartbreaking to watch her in the fourth episode, get drunk at Maddy's birthday party in order to suppress the pain.

Though fans were quick to hate Cal for the awful things he's done and label him as the biggest villain, they couldn't help but empathize with his story that was introduced in the "Out Of Touch" episode. After seeing Cal in a new light, fans felt sad for him, seeing how clearly unhappy he was with the life he lives today.

When Cal got drunk in the episode and decided to take a trip down memory lane, he visits the bar he used to frequent with his high school best friend and first love. Watching him make a drunken fool of himself and get kicked out of the bar unexpectedly broke fans' hearts, as they knew deep down all he wanted was to feel young and in love again.

Within the same episode of Cal getting kicked out of his favorite bar, he returns home during a personal awakening and promptly leaves his family, but not without exposing his family members first. While Cal did hone in on all the mistakes he has made throughout the years, he did not shy away from telling his family how he really felt about them, one thought being how Nate was his biggest disappointment.

While the scene was strangely humorous at times, Cal's bluntness mixed with his public insecurities makes for a quite sad experience for viewers. Though Cal finally got the courage to leave his family to search for his authentic happiness, what he left behind was his family, still broken and scarred from his mistakes.

"Stand Still Like The Hummingbird" opens with Rue stuck in the middle of intervention with her mother and sister, with Jules and Elliot listening in inside the living room. Upon finding out about the fate of her drug suitcase, Rue immediately goes into a frenzy, hurling insults at everyone in sight.

Though the audience is aware of the fact that drug addicts often say hurtful things they don't mean, it was still tough to watch Rue lash out at all of her loved ones in the harshest ways possible. Knowing just how much her family and friends love her and try to be there for her, it killed viewers to see Rue treat them like trash. Even though fans often debate if Jules is good for Rue or not, it's undeniable that no one deserves to be talked to the way Jules and Rue's family were.

During the same episode of her blowup with her loved ones, a desperate Rue turns to Laurie in an attempt to borrow any drugs she had to end her withdrawal suffering. Though Laurie seemed like a good source at first, it became very clear that once on her bad side, there's a very slim chance Rue could escape her grasp unscathed.

Once fans saw Laurie shoot up a vulnerable Rue with morphine, their stomachs dropped, as they knew Laurie had darker revenge plans in place. Luckily Rue was able to escape, for now, however, viewers of the show were worried sick for her, and it was heartbreaking seeing Rue surrender so easily.

As a scare tactic used to get his father's tape back, Nate not only broke into Maddy's bedroom but played Russian Roulette in front of her. This situation would be scary for anyone, let alone Maddy, who genuinely thought Nate loved her, despite all of the trauma he has put her through.

The undeniably toxic exes have had their share of scary and sadistic moments, including Nate choking her at the funfair in season 1. However, all fans can agree that Nate took things way too far this time, and they were scared to death for Maddy, as they watched her heartbreak in real-time as she surrendered to her abuser.

Though Rue has done a lot of bad things due to her drug addiction, the illusion with her father was by far one of the most devastating moments that made fans feel bad for Rue. Despite Rue being high when she imagined this encounter, it was deeply moving to watch her come before God with her pain and completely surrender.

As she tearfully embraced Labrinth while he sang "I'm Tired," the singer quickly shifted into her father, symbolizing her aspiration to cling to him in a time when she needs him the most. When viewers saw Rue dancing in her room by herself from the window's point of view, the collective sound of hearts breaking around the world was nearly heard.

Unsurprisingly, Ash's devastating death in the season 2 finale sent fans into an immediate frenzy. Though he was not a main character, fans grew to love him through his undying loyalty to Fez.

Viewers had hope throughout the scene that Ash would do the right thing, however, it became clear that he wanted to do whatever he could to protect himself and Fez. Knowing Ashtray's history with taking out anyone that has ever posed as a potential threat to Fez, he clearly thought he could do the same in this situation, but fans were heartbroken once they realized his deadly fate.

Fallout New Vegas 2 Should Follow New Vegas' Worst Ending

Fallout New Vegas 2 Should Follow New Vegas' Worst Ending

Discussions between Microsoft and Bethesda surrounding Fallout: New Vegas 2 are reportedly happening, and if the sequel is to be made, it should continue from one of the first game's worst endings. Fallout New Vegas 2 is reportedly being considered by Microsoft, reportedly with the developer of the original New Vegas, Obsidian, in mind. New Vegas had a bunch of wild endings with some being good, others bad, and a few being a little bit of both. Several of the endings the sequel game could continue from are the independent Yes Man ending and even one of the worst endings of the game, which involved the deaths of quite literally every faction in New Vegas.

Fallout: New Vegas is a critically-acclaimed spin-off RPG of the Fallout series set in a post-apocalyptic version of Nevada. Featuring a wide variety of factions, characters, and a complex, roleplaying narrative, New Vegas is considered by many as one of the best Fallout games of all time. After Microsoft's recent acquisition of Obsidian and Bethesda, the probability of a New Vegas sequel has increased, which could make this game - if it does enter development - one of the most highly anticipated RPGs of all time.

The endings of Fallout: New Vegas vary depending on which faction the player decides to side with. From the democratic republic of the NCR to the tyrannical Caesar's Legion to even working independently, the Courier has the power to decide the fate of the Mojave wasteland any way they want. One ending is the independent Yes Man ending, in which the Courier uses the platinum chip for their own motives to become the new head of the Mojave Wasteland and New Vegas itself. Considering how Fallout: New Vegas 2 would share a city with the original game and likely continue the story of the Mojave's wild and wondrous wasteland, it would make sense for a fairly chaotic ending like that would be the canonical choice to continue from.

There is one ending in Fallout: New Vegas that seems like it would be the best for a sequel game to stem from, and that is the independent ending. The independent ending involves the Courier using the platinum chip for themselves, and sees them defeat both Caesar's Legion and the NCR with the help of the trusty securitron and his legion of robots, Yes Man. New Vegas is deemed its own independent city-state in the wasteland, continuing the cycle of chaos that afflicts the Mojave.

An ending like this would certainly be a great point to continue the story of Fallout: New Vegas. It keeps the chaotic state the Mojave wasteland is in that many fans know and love while also progressing the story of Fallout somewhat. The Courier becomes another ruler of the wastes and could even be brought back as a returning character in the sequel game. The NCR is not totally wiped out in this ending as well, so the fan-favorite faction can be brought back once more in New Vegas 2.

Fallout: New Vegas was a story full of wild, unexpected endings set in a brutal and fierce Mojave wasteland. While some endings cause the Courier to either destroy everything in their sight or build the Mojave up, the independent ending makes the most sense to continue the story from in a sequel. This ending has the perfect balance of chaos while also progressing the story and not killing off most of the characters and factions. It sets them up for a return and could make Fallout: New Vegas 2 the sequel that fans have been dreaming to see for years.

How To Use An iPhone To Create Videos With Live Captions As You Speak

How To Use An iPhone To Create Videos With Live Captions As You Speak

An iPhone can create videos that show live captions as the user speaks, using a free app that Apple includes with every new iPhone and iPad. Some social media apps include an automatic caption feature but applying the effect after the video is made takes away the creator's control and could cover important details of the original video. With Apple's solution, the person making the video can see whether it works well and make any edits before uploading. There are also several varieties of titles to choose from.

YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram are among the top video-based social media apps, and all three offer automatic captioning. This is a very nice option for viewers that can't play sound or have a hearing impairment that makes it difficult to hear what is being said. Some phones, such as Google's Pixel line, have the ability to create live captions for nearly any video that is played on the device. Having the option is wonderful, and is quite functional in most cases, but only offers a simple sans-serif font with white text on a black background that might obscure a portion of the video.

Related: How To Turn iPhone Videos Into Photos With & Without An App

The Clips app For the iPhone can create what Apple calls Live Titles that are superimposed over a video in real-time as a person speaks. There are 18 different styles available, with text overlaid directly on the video. The app produces accurate and nice-looking titles with enough size and effect options to allow variety, along with the option to change styles or edit the text before saving. Activating Live Titles is super easy and simply requires opening the Clips app, tapping the Star icon in the lower-right, and selecting the effect that looks like a speech bubble to see the styles. Tapping any style switches Live Titles on.

When using Apple's Clips app to create Live Titles, some of the styles show a few words at a time similar to closed captions but there are a few choices that highlight or type each word as it's spoken for greater impact. This not only allows the viewer to read what is spoken but also lets them in on the timing. A dramatic pause will be reflected with the same timing in the Live Titles. There are different font styles, including sans serif, serif, and cursive as well as white, black and yellow text. Some options have the text directly overlaid on the iPhone's video with a light shadow, while most include a translucent background to ensure good readability.

Apple's Live Titles effect is a quite impressive technology that has been made effortless. Live Titles can also be combined with other effects. For example, an Animoji can be animated with an iPhone that has a TrueDepth camera while Live Titles are superimposed. The background effect lets the user 'transport' themselves to another location and this effect works with Live Titles as well. A few minutes with Apple's Clips app can produce some very interesting videos with professional-looking live captions using any iPhone running iOS 14 or higher.

New AfterShock Series A Calculated Man Pits Mathematician Against The Mob

New AfterShock Series A Calculated Man Pits Mathematician Against The Mob

Warning: contains preview images for A Calculated Man #1!

A Calculated Man, a new series from AfterShock Comics, will pit a mathematician against the mob. The book, whose first issue goes on sale in print and digital June 15th, follows math genius Jack Beans as he uses his talents to help bring down the crime family he used to work for. The book is written by veteran AfterShock creator Paul Tobin and illustrated by Alberto Alburquerque.

The brainchild of former Negative Burn editor Joe Pruett and former Marvel editor Mike Marts, AfterShock Comics entered the field in 2015, and have gone on to publish some of the most exciting and challenging comics in North America. The company was recognized for its output with a Diamond Gem Award for New Publisher in 2017. Among AfterShock’s offerings include the Eisner-nominated We Live, by Inaki Miranda and Roy Miranda as well as Bunny Mask (by A Calculated Man writer Paul Tobin), Animosity, and Seven Swords. Now the company is set to release one of the most unique crime comics on the stands: A Calculated Man.

A press release on AfterShock’s website provided more details on the new book, including a look at preview art, shared below. Jack Beans has been working for the Pinafore crime family, wasting his formidable math skills running numbers. Beans decides he wants out, going into Witness Protection after turning over evidence. Now the Pinafore family wants Jack Beans dead, but little do they know Beans is not going down without a fight. In order to stay one step ahead, Jack Beans must call on not only his mathematical genius but his perfect memory, which, according to the press release: “have made him a better killer than they ever could have realized.” Writer Paul Tobin, in citing his inspirations for the book, mentioned physicists Richard Feynman and Albert Einstein, and how the two might handle the mob. The preview pages show Jack going through the motions of his life, his resentment and fear barely hiding under the surface.

AfterShock Comics has released some truly compelling comics during their seven-year history, stretching across multiple genres. The company is no stranger to crime comics such as Miskatonic and Campisi, and A Calculated Man may be their most unique. Outside of films like A Beautiful Mind or The Accountant, mathematicians rarely get the spotlight in comics, or in media in general—until now. Jack Beans’ skills may not seem like much, but they are his only weapons against the Pinafores, and he will use them to reign hell down on his former employers.

AfterShock Comics continues their winning streak with A Calculated Man, a new series that shows what happens when a mathematician is pushed too far and must take on the mob.

Tiger King: 11 Joe Exotic Memes That Will Have You Cry-Laughing

Tiger King: 11 Joe Exotic Memes That Will Have You Cry-Laughing

Midway through a tumultuous 2020, many Netflix subscribers were watching the Tiger King docuseries, slack-jawed at each twist and turn in the unbelievable story.  At the heart of it all was Joe Exotic, a self-professed "gay cowboy" living in Oklahoma and running an exotic animal park. Joe had a personality that was is every bit as bold as his blonde mullet and wild outfits. He also has an ego as big as all of his tigers, combined—and he had quite a lot of tigers.

RELATED: 5 Reasons Why Jeff Is The Villain In Tiger King(& 5 Why It's Joe)

It's no surprise, then, that Joe became the perfect subject for Internet memes after the show came out. Though some adopted a meanspirited mindset regarding the controversial cowboy, many meme makers were simply eager to join in on the conversation surrounding this unconventional near-overnight sensation.

Updated on March 2nd, 2022, by Tanner Fox: An adaptation of Robert Moor's 2019 podcast titled Joe Exotic: Tiger King, Joe vs Carol is an upcoming Peacock series meant to explore the lives of two individuals who seemed unlikely to achieve stardom. Starring Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell, the comedy-drama will approach the funny-turned-near-fatal feud between Joe Exotic and Carol Baskin that was prominently featured in the Netflix miniseries.

The Tiger King may never again attain the level of fame he briefly enjoyed in 2020, but, for the moment, the series has returned Joe Exotic to the forefront of some fans' minds.

One of the many puzzling things about Joe Exotic is that he considers himself a country star, even selling his CDs in the park's gift shop. However, according to a report published by The Huffington Post, his voice isn't actually the one heard in his various exotic wildlife-theme country racks.

He does a great job of lip-syncing, though, and having that country star outfit complete with the cowboy hat and boots helps Joe Exotic to sell the illusion. Ultimately, however, his status as a musician is similar to his status as a zookeeper; dubious, to say the least.

King of the Hill may primarily focus on the life of Texas everyman Hank Hill, but it's also about the weird and wild characters he encounters. While there's really no everyman for whom to root in Tiger King, there's certainly a cast of unique and memorable individuals.

In fact, were it not for Hank himself, King of the Hill and Tiger King could meld fairly well together. Perhaps there will be some sort of reference to the Netflix series in the upcoming 2022 King of the Hill reboot.

After viewers got sucked into Netflix's reality dating series Love Is Blind and its many twists and turns, they were convinced they'd never see something again so totally out there. But, along came Tiger King, which picked up like wildfire as people were home social distancing.

When Joe says "I'm gonna show you some stuff," it's the understatement of the year. He had quite a bit to show, indeed, and most of it completely blew Love is Blind out of the water.

It's hard to imagine what a genie who inhabits a bottle of Mountain Dew might look like— or, it would be had Joe Exotic not come to everyone's attention. It's something about Joe's pose, the look on his face, the ridiculous outfit, and the background that makes the heading so fitting.

RELATED: 10 Best Joe Exotic Quotes From Netflix's Tiger King

According to myth, genies are known to live inside ancient lamps and grant three wishes to those who rub them. So, it stands to reason that, if one were to rub something less refined such as a bottle of soda, Joe Exotic might personify the type of genie that would result.

Although it was obviously coincidental, Tiger King and the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic are indelibly linked in the minds of many Netflix subscribers. It was the thing to binge during the Spring of 2020, and, while it was a tough time for many, the exploits of Joe Exotic, controversial though they were, served as a bright spot for many fans.

At the time, many could relate to appearing unkempt in at-home conference calls, and some may have felt as Joe Exotic appearing in a prison video call with a uniquely disheveled look.

As this meme so perfectly suggests, no one really asked for a show like Tiger King. It wasn't heavily promoted anywhere before it debuted. Viewers weren't clamoring for its release, nor were they excitedly waiting for the show to come out so they could binge it.

It just came out of nowhere. People were bored at home and said "gee, this looks like it might be interesting" and got sucked in. Part of the series' sudden success could be attributed to the sudden onset of a global pandemic, but part of it could also stem from the undeniable viral potential of Joe Exotic.

Joe Exotic must have discussed Carole Baskin's purported obsession with him dozens of times throughout the docuseries, constantly talking about her and proving that he had his own obsession as a result. If a girl likes three of your social media posts in a row, she's obsessed—at least, according to Joe Exotic.

RELATED: 10 Carole Baskin Memes That Will Have You Cry-Laughing

There's no doubt that Joe has had a tumultuous love life, and, though is private matters are best left undiscussed in memes, it suffices to say that his advice in this matter may not be suited to many other situations.

Some avid country music fans may not want to admit it, but the genre isn't for everyone. However, in Joe Exotic's native Oklahoma, it's more popular than it is in most parts of the world, and, in his own odd way, he's made his mark on it.

Though he doesn't actually sing his own songs, Joe's music is still far more professional than one might expect, and the diss track he made about Carol Baskin is humorous, to say the least. Even non-country fans could derive some enjoyment from this off-the-wall composition.

Toward the end of the docuseries, after Joe's failed attempts at taking Carole Baskin down that led to a massive lawsuit—which he eventually lost—he realized he would, as he phrased it, never be able to recover financially.

This became one of Joe's most oft-memed phrases. A perfect saying to poke fun at even the slightest monetary inconvenience, "I am never going to financially recover from this," is one of Joe Exotic's most legendary quotes.

Of all the hip hop diss tracks and online social media rap battles, no one comes close to Joe's country-themed diss track for Carole Baskin. He didn't just compose and sing—or, perhaps more accurately, lip-sync—a song called "Here Kitty Kitty" that accused her of murdering her husband and feeding his body to her tigers. Joe also made a ridiculous music video for it where he hired a lookalike to play Carole holding a platter of body parts, a human head in the center to prevent any misinterpretation, happily feeding it piece by piece to her ferocious feline pets.

Joe Exotic has never been one for subtlety, but this really crossed a line. Yet, as they say, comedy equals tragedy plus time, and, as grotesque as this video may have originally seemed, it's more or less just ridiculous today.

Instantly, the first thing fans notice about Joe Exotic is his hairstyle. It's like no other; a mullet that's dyed platinum blonde with the dark brown roots showing on shaved sides and bangs on the front.

He often wears a hat, as well, but, when he doesn't, it's on full display. Most of the time, it looks like the haircut someone seriously inexperienced might give themselves at home, and it brings a whole new meaning to the term "bad hair day."

7 Lemon (320k Followers)

Lemon is well known for her bright and spicy fashion looks. Season 1 of Canada's Drag Race stands out as having one of the best Drag Race casts, and that is where Lemon made her first appearance.

Lemon's Instagram has an appealing theme of things in three. She tends to post three photos from the same shoot, making it aesthetically pleasing to look at her feed as a whole. Her photos are mostly professional ones in different drag outfits, but every now and then fans get to see her out of drag enjoying life.

6 Jimbo (372k Followers)

Alongside Lemon, Jimbo also made her first appearance in season 1 of Canada's Drag Race. Her outgoing and loud personality makes her hard to miss in the show, but with that comes a lot of fun.

As co-host of the first two seasons of Drag Race Thailand, Pangina Heels brings her true self to the competition. Although Pangina hasn't competed in RuPaul's Drag Race before, seeing winners be crowned and their looks throughout the show will definitely help her not fall behind her competitors.

This queen's Instagram sets her apart from her fellow contestants in the fact that it isn't immediately filled with glamour shots. While her Instagram does have some glamour shots of her in drag, she has an equal amount of shots of her not in drag as well as dressed up as a character she plays called Fannie. Fannie is starkly different than the usual avant-garde drag looks fans are used to, but the contrast shows just how comfortable Heals is sporting any look.

3 Baga Chipz (480k Followers)

Baga Chipz is well known in and out of her hometown. Having placed third in season 1 of the UK's Drag Race, she came into this international competition ready to win. With eight other iconic queens to compete against, Baga stands out by being one of the funniest RuPaul's Drag Race UK queens.

It's filled with candid shots of her out at events with friends and family, or even just doing normal everyday things, like going out to eat. Her feed also has a decent amount of promotional posts, whether it's for a company she partnered with, or for a show she'll be in. Baga's feed does a good job of showing fans a little bit of her life outside of her drag.

2 Mo Heart (751k Followers)

Going into the new competition, Monique Heart announced their name change to Mo Heart. Fans and fellow competitors loved this and were ready for more of Mo. This change didn't alter how fiercely Heart was performing and competing.

Vikings: Valhalla - What Freydis Being "The Last" Really Means

Vikings: Valhalla - What Freydis Being "The Last" Really Means

The first season of Vikings: Valhalla saw Freydís learning about her destiny through a pagan ritual and a visit from The Seer, who called her “The Last” – but what does that mean? One of the most popular historical dramas in recent years is Vikings, created by Michael Hirst, which premiered on the History Channel in 2013. Vikings came to an end in 2020 after six seasons full of betrayals, alliances, and exciting battles, but six seasons weren’t enough to tell the most exciting stories from the Viking Age, and so a sequel series was announced in 2019.

Titled Vikings: Valhalla, the series is set over a century after the events of Vikings and as such it follows a new generation of warriors and enemies. Valhalla follows Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), and Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter), who embark on a journey that takes them across oceans and battlefields, from Kattegat to England and beyond, all this with the conflict between Vikings and English royals (pagans vs. Christians) as the backdrop. The tension between pagans and Christians was at the core of Valhalla, and the character through which this is best exemplified is Freydís.

Freydís arrived at Kattegat with her brother Leif and company looking for revenge on the man (a Christian) who raped her years ago and left her with a scar in the shape of a cross on her back. Freydís found and killed the man responsible, but in order to save her life as he was one of Olaf Haraldsson’s (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson)  men, Leif had to join Harald, Olaf, and Canute’s (Bradley Freegard) journey to attack England. Freydís stayed in Kattegat with Jarl Haakon (Caroline Henderson), who sent her to the pagan temple in Uppsala to learn more about the gods and find her destiny. Through a ritual, Freydís met The Seer (John Kavanagh), who told her she was “The Last”, a prophecy that also resonated with Christian berserker Jarl Kåre (Asbjørn Krogh Nissen), who went after her and destroyed Uppsala and attacked Kattegat.

By the time Kåre attacked Kattegat, Freydís was already a shieldmaiden, and she fought to defend Kattegat. Haakon was killed during the battle and reminded Freydís that she’s "The Last". By the end of Vikings: Valhalla, Freydís left Kattegat with Harald, and she could be the only surviving shieldmaiden. However, the prophecy might also refer to her beliefs, as most (if not all) of the residents of Kattegat have been killed or captured by Olaf’s forces, and with a number of pagans killed during the burning of Uppsala, Freydís could be the last pagan standing in the area. Now, although Leif is also a pagan, he started going through a crisis of belief in the first season of Vikings: Valhalla after a girl left a cross in his hands when she thought he was dying. Leif still carries the cross, and even gave it to Liv so she would recover faster.

With Kattegat now taken over by the Danes, as Sweyn Forkbeard (Søren Pilmark) arrived at the end of Vikings: Valhalla season 1, and Freydís leaving with an injured Harald, her story has just begun, as it’s to be seen where she will go, what she will do next (especially if she will take revenge against Olaf), and how she will carry on with the prophecy of being “The Last” – whether the last shieldmaiden, the last pagan, or something else.

Lord Of The Rings: 10 Things The Movies Did Better Than The Books, According To Reddit

One of the most enduring debates within The Lord of the Rings fandom is the question of whether Jackson’s version of the story in any way managed to exceed Tolkien’s original. While there are many who continue to believe that Jackson got it all wrong and that Tolkien’s was far superior, there are also those who are willing to say that Jackson actually improved some elements.

In particular, the users at Reddit have pointed out that there are elements of Tolkien’s story that were in need of the update that Jackson provided.

One of the most notable changes to the LOTR books was the decision to have Faramir nearly seduced by the power of the Ring. AdmiralStark believes that this is a great change from the movie, as it creates “an interesting dark echo of Boromir's corruption by the ring.” In Tolkien’s original story, Faramir is ultimately one of the very few characters to have almost no temptation to take it, which can read to some as unbelievable, given the extent to which the Ring has been shown to be so powerful.

Aragorn is one of the most powerful characters in the books and the movies, but he is in some ways a plot device in the former. FaerieStories noted that the movie Aragorn may be a bit mopey, but he is more of a fully-fledged character. The book version, they assert, “exists for reasons that are useful to the narrative, but there's nothing interesting about him other than that.” Given that the books mostly focus on the actions of the hobbits–with some notable exceptions–there is something to this line of argument.

There’s no question that Tolkien’s original novel is epic in every sense of the word, including its simple length. It’s a sprawling story that takes account of many different areas of Middle-earth.

Some Redditors, including FroodLoops, note that one of the great strengths of the movies is that they excel at “streamlining the storyline to cut out the unnecessary/tangential plot lines and fleshing out others where appropriate. It made for a crisp but reasonably through and entertaining telling if the story.” While some beloved characters didn’t appear, this contributed to the movie’s superiority.

Even though there are relatively few romances in the original novel, one of the most notable is that between Aragorn and Arwen. Elphie93 recalls “feeling a little disappointed that Aragorn and Arwen's ties weren't developed further in the books.” Fortunately for this user, the movies take a great deal of time to show just how much Aragorn and Arwen mean to one another, to such an extent that they can be seen as one of the best relationships in the LOTR movies.

Even the most devoted Tolkien readers will sometimes acknowledge that The Two Towers is the weakest part of the book, mostly because the action begins to flag. Rudy_13, for example, notes that “theres something about TTT film script” that sets it apart from the book upon which it’s based. In part, this user is no doubt responding to the fact that the movie version includes a titanic battle scene as well as a notable confrontation between Frodo and one of the Ringwraiths, as well as Gollum.

In the books, the battle scenes, particularly those at Helm’s Deep and at the Pelennor Fields, are vital parts of the story. However, they are described for the most part without the kind of detail that they would need to make a big impact on screen. Ramoncg_ remarks that they “always recommend the movies to people who have read the books and want to see all those major events play out in an epic form.” There’s no question that the battles in Jackson’s trilogy are some of the most awe-inspiring to grace the big screen.

Sauron is one of the most powerful creatures in Middle-earth, and his influence can be felt almost anywhere. In particular, it is often conceptualized as a great eye, though the book is vague about what this actually entails. Jackos1221 remarks that “the interpretation of Sauron being a flaming eye was amazing.” It is certainly a striking visual, and it shows just how capable this being is of seeing almost anything that happens on the broad face of Middle-earth.

Though there are many things to enjoy about Tolkien’s masterwork, there are some things that it is lacking, most notably a great deal of character interiority. The movie, however, gives these individuals a vibrancy that they can sometimes lack on the page.

This is what makes it appealing to many Reddit users. TannenFalconwing, for example, notes that “By the time we got to the Return of the King we had probably the best portrayals of every main character you could ask for.”

There’s no doubt that Jackson’s trilogy are some of the best fantasy movies ever made. However, they differ from the novels in terms of genre, for though they are an epic, they also have a lot in common with the adventure movie. As The_Commandant points out, “the films operate as a fantasy adventure. The books, in contrast, are an epic, and resemble (to me) an Anglo-Saxon version of the Odyssey.” Though the movies might sacrifice some of the richness and complexity of the books, they do nevertheless manage to sweep the viewer up in a grand conflict.

Denethor is one of the most complicated characters in both the movies and the books, and he is deeply tragic in both. Though each interpretation has much to recommend it, The_Commandant argues that “I think the movie version feels more real; the way he's driven into depression by Boromir's death feels more tragic to me.” Even Denethor’s fiery plunge off of the top of the White Tower can be seen as a truly terrible end for a man driven to madness and despair by his grief.
