Why Jared Leto's Joker Looks So Different In Justice League Snyder Cut

Jared Leto's Joker is getting a fresh new look for his role in Zack Snyder's Justice League. One of the biggest DC villains to have joined the DCEU is the Clown Prince of Crime, as he came to the big screen in 2016. After making his debut in Suicide Squad, Leto's incarnation of the Batman villain was nowhere to be seen, despite Warner Bros. initially having several plans for the character. And while Leto wasn't in Birds of Prey, a stand-in actor played the Joker briefly for a scene or two that effectively ended his story with Harley Quinn.

However, Snyder's Justice League will change that as the director is bringing the iconic villain back. In October 2020, it was surprising when it was announced Leto would be reprising his role as Joker. While additional filming was brief, Leto was one of the actors to be part of it, adding a lot of intrigue to what Joker will be up to in the Snyder Cut. From the looks of it, Joker will be connected to the Knightmare timeline which was first teased with the initial trailer for Snyder's Justice League.

Snyder already promised Leto's Joker would get a new look, which would be vastly different from the design in 2016's Suicide Squad. After months of waiting, the director officially teased what Joker will look like in the Snyder Cut as Leto returns to the role. While his Joker card is more in focus than the villain, it's clear as day that Leto will look nothing like he did in 2016. Despite being black-and-white, Joker's hair is longer than it was in Suicide Squad. It also appears that he might be in a jumpsuit, possibly an Arkham Asylum one, but that remains to be seen. Plus, the look as a whole is more reminiscent of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker than it is Leto's.

The bigger question, however, is what is the cause for this new look? There are a number of factors to take into account because it relates both to the plot as well as the history of Leto's Joker. When his Suicide Squad look was first revealed, it received mixed responses. Despite having a fairly traditional Joker look with the green-hair and pale skin, there were notable issues with the tattoos as well as some of his wardrobe. For the Snyder Cut, it makes sense his updated look fits better with the aesthetic. However, story-wise, the Knightmare timeline would be several years in the future, and as Joker changes as a character, so does his look.

The idea that his hair is longer indicates that Joker, like the rest of Earth, has to focus on survival rather than living his everyday life. With Darkseid's invasion, Joker's path in the Snyder Cut, especially during the Knightmare timeline, will be a crucial part of his character. The Joker that viewers met in Suicide Squad almost five years ago will have obviously evolved and gone through things by the time they see him in the Snyder Cut. It would be unnatural, even for Joker, if he still looked and was exactly the same as he was in 2016.
