A reveal of Mera’s Knightmare costume for Zack Snyder’s Justice League shows her wielding Aquaman’s trident during the post-apocalyptic timeline, but just why does she have it? The Knightmare is set to be a major component of the Snyder cut, featuring much of the film’s new footage - including new material for Mera and the Joker. Several characters are getting new costumes for the Knightmare sequence, some of which teases details of the story to come.
The Knightmare barely appeared in 2017’s theatrical cut of Justice League, but it will be greatly expanded in the Snyder Cut. The sequence takes place in a timeline where Darkseid succeeds in killing Lois Lane, making Superman susceptible to the Anti-Life Equation and subsequently turning him into a malicious dictator. The Earth is transformed into a barren wasteland, and the few heroes who remain band together to hold the line against the evil regime. It’s a grim, dark future, which sets the stakes for the Justice League’s proper battle against Darkseid.
A number of Justice League characters have been confirmed for the Knightmare, including Batman, Cyborg, Flash, Deathstroke, Mera, and Joker. That list has some notable absences – namely, Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Atlantis presumably falls in the Knightmare timeline, along with the rest of the Earth, which makes it odder still that Aquaman hasn’t been seen fighting alongside his fellow heroes. The fact that Mera is using his trident in the Knightmare, however, offers a possible, grim explanation as to Arthur Curry's fate.
There’s only one logical reason why Mera would be using Aquaman’s trident – that he’s dead, and she’s been left to carry the legacy of her people alone. From what’s been shown of the Knightmare future so far, it’s not unbelievable that one or more of Earth’s greatest heroes might have perished in the days following Superman’s dark turn. The Knightmare is meant to show the horror of a future where Darkseid wins, after all, so the deaths of some primary characters in that timeline make sense.
Though there’s plenty of new and altered material in Zack Snyder’s Justice League beyond the Knightmare, it has been a particular focus of the reshoots and subsequent marketing campaign. Snyder has always been known for his striking visual stylings, and those look to be on full display in the Knightmare sequence. Hopefully, the expanded character development and new touches like Jared Leto’s Joker will help fill in the holes viewers complained of in the theatrical cut. Zack Snyder’s Justice League releases on HBO Max on March 18.
