Elden Ring Has Online Multiplayer For Up To 4 Players

It has been confirmed that Elden Ring will feature online multiplayer that supports up to four players at once. This was demonstrated Thursday's surprise Elden Ring gameplay reveal trailer, which was shown at Summer Game Fest 2021.

Games developed by FromSofware are notoriously difficult, but that comes with a caveat. Demon's Soulsthe Dark Souls trilogy, and Bloodborne all allow players to call human allies into the game using online multiplayer. Even the mightiest FromSoftware bosses, like Ludwig or Ornstein and Smough, become a lot easier when other players are called into aide in the fight. The exception to this is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which has no multiplayer component, making it possibly the most difficult FromSoftware game. The only way to call for help in Sekiro is with the aid of the multiplayer mod on PC.

After what feels like an eternity of waiting, the world was given its first glimpse of Elden Ring gameplay at Summer Games Fest 2021. A line in a FromSoftware press release that was distributed after the hyped reveal reads that players can explore the game's unforgiving world "alone or online with friends," and the official Elden Ring Japanese site reads that the game supports "1 to 4 people," according to a Google translation.

There was a moment in the trailer that also confirmed the presence of multiplayer. The depicted player uses a metallic cube as an item, which emits a magical light. Two blue spirits are then summoned, surrounded by the same magical glow. These spirits then fight alongside the player, with one of them appearing to use a whip in battle. For now, it's unclear what the restrictions are for summoning other players in Elden Ring. The original Dark Souls also allowed up to four players in one session, which was increased to six in Dark Souls: Remastered, and it's unsure for now if Elden Ring will also support PvP.

The presence of online multiplayer in Elden Ring means that players will be able to tackle the dark fantasy open world and its many nightmarish bosses together. There's a good chance that being able to call on spirits means that invading spirits are also back, and the new focus on mounts means that players can be pursued a lot faster. However, hat's still a small price to pay for the many players who will call on the aid of friends or strangers when they need to defeat that one boss that has been tormenting them for hours on end.
