Elden Ring's Coolest Traversal Method Can't Be Used In Multiplayer

News that FromSoftware's Elden Ring will feature rideable horses generated a ton of excitement; however, the mounts won't be accessible in multiplayer, according to Director Hidetaka Miyazaki. After approximately two years of silence, FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment re-revealed Elden Ring with a gameplay reveal during Summer Game Fest 2021.

The fresh footage and subsequently shared details let loose information about the vast setting, story, and fantasy author George R. R. Martin's role in the creative process. Multiplayer received confirmation, too, though FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have yet to specify what exactly the online options will entail. But based on what's been shown, thus far, it appears as if the Soulsborne-style of online play will sit center stage, meaning players may be able to call upon and offer help while traversing the world.

Miyazaki recently confirmed one interesting detail about the multiplayer aspect of Elden Ring - the double-jumping horse will not play a part in online travels. Speaking with Japanese publication Famitsu, the developer divulged that players will have the ability to explore the open-world environment with friends. Even boss battles are expected to support Elden Ring's co-op options. Riding horses when online, however, simply isn't on the cards, Miyazaki said. A translated version of the quote (via theangryfurlong/Reddit,) reads as follows: "Yes. There are a few exceptions, but multiplayer is possible even in the massive open field. You can even go straight into boss battles together. However, during multiplayer you can't use your horse, so be warned."

Some may find this piece of news disappointing. If Elden Ring's landscape is truly as vast as it seems, forgoing the use of a mount could prove a rather steep price to pay for those who just want to team up with friends and other players. But because the nature of multiplayer remains so nebulous, it's possible that such a decision may be for the better.

Initially unveiled during E3 2019, Elden Ring went dark for quite a long while. It's since returned to the spotlight with renewed vigor, giving the public plenty of new information to chew on. And by the sounds of things, FromSoftware's latest opus seems just as fascinating as its previous outings.
