Spider-Man Just Flipped the MCU's Best Cliffhanger | Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers to Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow #3 below!

Spider-Man just flipped the MCU's best cliffhanger, the revelation of Spider-Man's identity to the world. Although this has been done before in comics, Mysterio's exposure of Peter Parker's secret identity added to its shock with the lie that Spider-Man was actually the villain, not Quentin Beck. In Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow, it is the direct opposite as the Kingpin exposes the lethal vigilante's identity to the world, his death releasing the information to expose Spider-Man as the true villain he has become instead of hiding behind the image of the hero he used to be.

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker is tapped by Nick Fury to help Quentin Beck aka Mysterio fight the invading Elementals who had destroyed his world. It is revealed that Quentin is an unstable former Stark Industries employee working with others to expand the scope of his illusions worldwide and fraudulently establish himself as a powerful hero. Although Spider-Man stops Mysterio's drone attack, the deceased Spider-Man villain has the last laugh when he releases doctored footage to the media blaming Spider-Man for his death and the drone strike before revealing his identity. In Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow, Peter's time with the symbiote suit that would later become Venom takes a different path when he decides to keep the symbiote instead of rejecting it. Over time, Peter's body and mind becomes further bonded with the alien creature whose influence encourages Peter to become more violent and ruthless, even justifying the injury and death of long-time Spider-Man villains who cross his path.

In Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow #3 by Chip Zdarsky and Pasqual Ferry, Peter's descent into villainy concerns other Marvel heroes but also other villains, some of whom reform the Sinister Six with the hope of trapping and even killing their unhinged mutual enemy. When this trap becomes a slaughter resulting in further loss of life, they are successful at separating Peter from the symbiote thanks to its weakness to fire. Peter is taken back to his apartment by his former employer and Sinister Six member J. Jonah Jameson where they are greeted by Mary Jane and Black Cat. Although relieved to see Peter and not Spider-Man, MJ insists that they have to leave immediately. Having been out of the loop, Black Cat reveals to Jonah that the Kingpin had a failsafe ready in case of his death. When Spider-Man killed him, his secret identity was revealed to the world.

Although MCU's Mysterio and this version of Kingpin had the same idea, their motivations are completely different. Quentin Beck's grandiose plan of deceit, fraud, and manipulation which was ruined by Spider-Man's interference not only referenced their comics enmity but seemingly ended when he was accidentally killed. His goal was revenge, both outing Peter and framing him as the real villain responsible in hopes of protecting his legacy and destroying Spider-Man's heroic persona. In Spider's Shadow #2, Spider-Man confronted Kingpin after brutally dispatching his minions with Fisk revealing he had deduced Peter's real identity thanks to Aunt May's death during his battle with the Hobgoblin. Although he died shortly after, his act of revenge sought to expose the truth, to show the world that this hero had become a villain and should not be allowed to hide in plain sight until he is brought to justice.

The revelation of his true identity leaves either Spider-Man at a crossroads. While MCU's Peter and his life afterward will be explored in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider's Shadow Peter has to not only grasp the reality of his crimes that he allowed but that the symbiote has found a terrifying new host with plans that threaten the world. Although everyone now knows their name, they're still Spider-Man and the responsibilities never end.
