Released on June 4, 2021, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the third entry in the long-running horror franchise saw Ed and Lorraine face the villainous Occultist to prove Arne Johnson’s innocence.
An interesting way to gauge character personalities is by applying them to the traits of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin houses from Harry Potter. Ed and Lorraine were joined in The Conjuring 3 by numerous others, including Sergeant Clay and Father Kastner, among others, and it's worth checking out which house they would belong to if they were to attend Hogwarts.
10 Ed Warren: Gryffindor
Out of all the characters Patrick Wilson has played in horror movies, Ed Warren is definitely the bravest of the lot. In The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Ed took his chivalrous and determined nature further by fighting against his heart condition to save Arne, and later Lorraine.
Gryffindors tend to lose sight of their goals when their families are threatened, with Ed also placing preference toward Lorraine’s well-being rather than her use of her powers. He also tended to charge straight into conflict rather than assess the situation, showing his Gryffindor-style bravery along with the house’s rash nature.
9 Sergeant Clay: Slytherin
Not all Slytherins are bad, as the house’s dominant traits are to be cunning, cynical, and self-serving. Sergeant Clay was strictly on the side of the law and he didn’t hand out sympathies toward the Warrens as he wanted to work to the benefit of his case.
He was also not convinced about the presence of demonic entities and was smart enough to reach a deal with the Warrens in exchange for finding the body of the victim he was looking for. Slytherins do have a sense of loyalty toward select people, and Sergeant Clay displayed this when the Warrens had won his trust.
8 David Glatzel: Hufflepuff
Hufflepuffs are generally innocent in mentality and assume the best in everything. When they’re knocked down by challenges, Hufflepuffs tend to lose themselves. This was what happened to David, as he went from a happy child to a brooding one haunted by his past possession.
David didn’t showcase any real level of bravery, but he was loyal toward Arne and appreciated his act of inviting the demon into himself. Like a true Hufflepuff, David stuck by his friend even during his worst times while encouraging Arne to be patient with his suffering.
7 Arne Johnson: Gryffindor
Gryffindors are too daring for their own good, as Arne proved when he offered to take on the demon from David. There’s little doubt over Arne's courageous nature either, as it was established when he told David that even a person who’s scared can be brave.
Despite suffering from possession, Arne was willing to go through with it as it was his decision. He was also unphased at the prospect of being tried for killing Bruno even though he knew he was innocent. Gryffindors have the sheer nerve to face such consequences, and Arne certainly fits the bill.
6 Debbie Glatzel: Hufflepuff
The people who will stand by others through thick and thin are more than likely to belong to Hufflepuff house. Debbie wasn’t the most daring person, as she didn’t jump into conflict on her own, but she remained by the side of both her brother and her boyfriend when they were under the demon’s control.
She was also shown to be loyal to Arne in their romance, as Debbie promised him that they would be together no matter what happened. She married Arne while he was in prison and never left his side until her own death decades later.
5 Father Kastner: Gryffindor
Despite popular belief, not all Gryffindors are supposed to be heroes. In fact, their stubbornness and degree of self-righteousness can lead to them making the worst decisions. Father Kastner certainly did so by protecting the identity of the Occultist, who was revealed to be his adoptive daughter.
Gryffindors’ overprotectiveness is another negative trait that Father Kastner displayed, as it took the Occultist outright attempting to kill Ed and Lorraine for him to finally try to bring her down. Father Kastner was also brave in his own way, as he attempted to save the couple at the cost of his own life.
4 Drew Thomas: Ravenclaw
One of the underrated traits of Ravenclaw house is that its members can think outside the box. Drew has been present in all of The Conjuring movies but hasn’t enjoyed much spotlight, even though he’s come up with crucial solutions when others haven’t.
He was at his best in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It when he was able to pinpoint the location of the Occultist through a process of elimination on the map. Like a Ravenclaw, Drew displayed quick thinking when it counted most that ended up leading Ed to the Occultist’s location.
3 Father Newman: Hufflepuff
Hufflepuffs don’t crave the spotlight nor do they seek big praise for their efforts, as these personalities are content with helping out where they can. Father Newman was an unsung hero in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, being the one to keep Arne’s demon at bay.
Father Newman wasn’t naturally talented in this area, and much like a Hufflepuff, got through the ordeal through will and hard work. In the end, he was happy with the knowledge that Arne was freed from his possession without looking for credit for the part he played.
2 The Occultist: Slytherin
The Occultist is responsible for adding to the scary deaths seen in The Conjuring universe, as her control over the demon granted her unnatural powers. She was ambitious like a Slytherin, which paved the way for her to become power-hungry, another negative attribute of the house.
The Slytherin knack for being cunning was also present in the Occultist when she lured Ed to where she and Lorraine were in order to put Ed under her thrall and sic him on his own wife. She was much like Voldemort in that the Occultist was killed when her own plan backfired on her, causing her demise.
1 Lorraine Warren: Ravenclaw
Where Ed takes the role of the headstrong personality, Lorraine is the thinker and it’s through this that the Warrens have faced the challenges of their cases. Like a Ravenclaw, Lorraine is also a wise person who considers the nature of a situation and how it affects others.
Those in the Ravenclaw house are noted for their willingness to learn, and Lorraine understood what the demon’s patterns were that eventually led her to the Occultist’s true nature. Being around Lorraine gives people a different viewpoint to see things from — a kind of imparting of wisdom that only Ravenclaws can achieve.
