A new licensing agreement between Playmates Toys and ViacomCBS Consumer Products will see new lines of Star Trek toys hitting the shelves in 2022. The deal is intended to coincide with the release of the CG animated Star Trek: Prodigy, which will be the first Star Trek series meant for younger viewers. Playmates Toys has produced products for the Star Trek Universe in the past, as they held the master toy license from 1992-1999. During that time, the company made numerous toys for various Star Trek properties, including Deep Space Nine, The Next Generation, and even the original series. The company also made products for J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek film.
According to Startrek.com, the deal will see Playmates Toys manufacturing new toys for current Star Trek shows, including Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks. The deal also extends to future shows and movies that have yet to be announced, and beyond just action figures, it includes ships, vehicles, and other aspects like role-playing. Dion Vlachos, the Executive Vice President of Hardlines and Retail for ViacomCBS Consumer Products, said, "We are thrilled to also enter the toy aisle with Playmates, offering a new generation of fans out of this world toys that will allow them to embark on their own Star Trek adventures at home."
Star Trek toys are nothing new, as they've been made for decades, with avid collectors and fans buying them up. While the deal is coming alongside Star Trek: Prodigy, Trekkies can rest assured that in addition to kid-friendly lines of toys for Prodigy, the lines put out for shows like Discovery and Picard will appeal to older audiences. With Playmates Toys' track record with Star Trek products over the years, fans can continue to expect the same level of quality and detail they have come to know from the company.
