Season two of Special was a great finale for the series. Despite only having two seasons, the show saw its main cast go through a lot of growth, especially when it came to the second season, as everyone's storylines began to come to a close. However, not everyone's arcs were equal to one another.
Some characters went through bigger periods of growth throughout the series than others. From smaller arcs to life-changing ones, everyone grew in one way or another in season two, even the queen of the entire series who deserves the absolute world, Samantha.
6 Samantha
Samatha might not seem like a character that would get any sort of an arc, she's a throwaway side character that is used for laughs. However, she does go through a bit of an arc, albeit a small one. After walking in on Olivia doing ... something in her office at Eggwoke, she instantly gets a raise and a lot of power at the company.
She also gets a makeover following the incident because, why not? She has the money to do so. Samatha went from being Olivia's pet to basically owning her through accidental blackmail. If that isn't growth that we can all get behind, then what is? Now what she walked in on is unfortunately something that we will never know.
5 Olivia
Olivia is only higher on the list than Samantha because she's a main character and, as such, has to go through at least a little bit of growth, as she has a good amount of screentime. However, any growth that she goes through is minimal, at best. She's not one to change her ways, she's fully absorbed in herself, and loves every minute of it.
At the very least, Olivia has to learn that the way she's running Eggwoke isn't working. She loses both Kim and Ryan within a very short amount of time. Hopefully learning that she needs to modify the way that she manages Eggwoke will help her go far in life. Either way, she's not likely to learn that respecting people is a good thing to do in general. She's set in her ways, and those ways are, frankly, not caring about others.
4 Tanner
Tanner's arc is a bit of a complicated one. He certainly grows by the end of the series, but not quite in the way that would be expected. Through going to prom with Ryan, he learns that the way that he treats differently-abled people isn't the best. While he's not actively trying to be offensive, he manages to wrong basically everyone there, which is a lesson that he can take with him in the future.
Otherwise, through leaving Richard and going back to him after he breaks up with Ryan, he's sort of all over the place. At least by the end, he can stand to be in the same bar as Ryan, despite the way they left things off.
3 Ryan
Ryan learns quite a bit in season two. Primarily, he learns that he can take care of himself, that he doesn't need to be with anyone unless he wants to, and that he deserves more than what he gets at Eggwoke.
Ryan also learns that he needs to treat some people better, specifically, his mom. His mom, Karen, has devoted essentially her entire life to Ryan's wellbeing, and he took advantage of that a few times. However, by the end of the series, he's a better person for all that he'd gone through. Despite being the main character, though, he didn't have the best arc in the series.
2 Kim
Kim, mainly learns that she needs to get her life under control. She has a massive amount of credit card debt that needs to be taken care of, there's no way around it. As such, she moves back in with her parents and actually begins to really get the issue under control, despite how it hurts her pride.
She also learns that she deserves real love, someone who actually wants to be with her. And finally, like the boss she is, she realizes that the path she needs to be on is starting her own company. By the end of the season, she's done just that, with Ryan as her first employee.
1 Karen
Karen learns the most out of everyone in the season. While she goes through a lot of growth in just about every area of her life, the main thing that she learns is that she needs to live her own life. She dedicated her entire life to Ryan from the day he was born. While this is something that she wanted to do, it had gone on for long enough. Ryan was an adult at this point, and it was her turn to live the life that she wanted to.
And by the end of the series, she made new friends and moved to a place that she really wanted to be. Karen more or less got her own life in season two, and it was great to watch happen.
