The Vampire Diaries: Each Main Character's Most Iconic Scene

Some of the characters on The Vampire Diaries are among the most iconic in recent television history. Even though the show ended in 2017, loyal fans still rewatch and discuss it today, with a lot of focus on the characters who made it so memorable. That includes vampires, witches, werewolves, hybrids, and more.

The series featured a slew of main characters so narrowing it down to just ten is difficult. Someone like Jenna wasn't around long enough, while Klaus and the other Originals moved over to their own spin-off series. Each character on The Vampire Diaries had at least one special standout moment.

10 Tyler Lockwood - The First Transformation

In season 2, Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) had his werewolf curse triggered when he accidentally killed a girl. With his uncle Mason gone, Tyler had no real way of knowing what to expect for the first time he'd officially turn at the full moon.

Tyler got help from Caroline for that fateful night, which he was terrified of after seeing video of Mason's painful turns. While it's not a happy scene, it demonstrates all that Tyler has to suffer through, solidifies his bond with Caroline, and is his most pivotal appearance on screen.

9 Matt Donovan - Seeing Vicki On The Other Side

Poor Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) had it rough on The Vampire Diaries. As the only character to remain human from start to finish, he was often at a disadvantage during any dangerous situation but he proved his bravery over and over. The most heartbreaking thing to happen to him was the loss of his sister Vicki.

In a desperate attempt to see her once more and help his friends, Matt made a huge sacrifice. He took his own life so that he could travel to the Other Side and speak with Vicki. Though he expected Bonnie to bring him back (and she did) it was a huge risk and an emotional reunion for the Donovan siblings.

8 Jeremy Gilbert - Becoming A Vampire Hunter

In the early stages of the series, Mystic Falls saw vampire hunters like Alaric Saltzman but when Connor showed up in season 4, he was an entirely different animal. He was legitimate, had tons of weapons for his fight, and had the hunter's mark all over his body.

When Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) spotted it, Connor knew that he was a potential hunter. Events unfolded that led to Jeremy officially becoming a hunter and watching as the mark developed on his body ended up being a huge moment for someone who was pretty normal to that point.

7 Alaric Saltzman - His Emotional Funeral

Not all iconic scenes are going to be happy. At the end of season 3, Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis) died officially (for the first time at least) after Esther attempted to turn him into an Original vampire. When he decided not to make the transition, his loved ones gathered to say goodbye.

Everyone showed up from his girlfriend at the time Meredith to his found family in the Gilberts to his former students. The true kicker was when Damon Salvatore returned to have a final drink with his good friend. Though Alaric came back as a villain afterward, it didn't impact this scene.

6 Katherine Pierce - Cutting Off John's Fingers

The season 1 finale ended with a shocking moment. It started innocent enough as John Gilbert spoke to Elena Gilbert, or so he thought. However, Elena then grabbed a knife and cut off John's fingers in vicious fashion, revealing that she wasn't actually Elena.

It was Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev), making her first appearance in the modern era. She showed her vampire face as she nearly took John's life just as Elena returned home. The two doppelgängers were set to meet as season 2 got started, which was monumental.

5 Caroline Forbes - Showing Her Mom Her Vampire Side

For most of season 1, Caroline Forbes (Candice King) was the annoying friend who wasn't really meant to be very likable. That changed in a major way when season 2 began with her becoming a vampire after being killed by Katherine with Damon's blood in her system.

Vampire Caroline proved to be a far better, more likable, and much tougher person. She hid her secret from her vampire-hating mother for a while but finally revealed it as she saved Stefan and Damon. It showed off her badass side but ended with a sad, "Hi mom" as she came face to face with Liz.

4 Bonnie Bennett - Battling Klaus

Klaus Mikaelson had been built up as the biggest bad possible throughout season 2. So, when it came time for him to break his curse, it was impressive that the only person powerful enough to stop him was the show's major witch, Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham).

Although she still hadn't mastered her witch capabilities yet, Bonnie harnessed enough power to stand up to Klaus. The image of her chanting as she took him down made her look like a total badass. She would've succeeded if it wasn't for Elijah backing out on the plan.

3 Damon Salvatore - Telling Elena He Loves Her

It might not have been expected when the series began but the show's core romance ended up being between Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). Long before they officially got together, Damon had to tell her out loud that he had legitimate feelings for her.

Early in season 2, Damon showed up in Elena's room one night. He got emotional as he professed his love for her but he knew that it was selfish since she was with his brother. So, Damon compelled her to forget and it was one of the best scenes the couple shared.

2 Stefan Salvatore - Sacrificing Himself For Damon

As soon as it became official that Damon would end up with Elena, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) had a more unstable place on the show. However, the one thing that remained intact through it all was that he shared a tight bond with his brother.

As the series was wrapping up, Stefan made the ultimate sacrifice. He gave up his own life to save his brother and also handed him the cure so that he could live out a happy human life with Elena. It was the ultimate move for a brother to do.

1 Elena Gilbert - Waking Up As A Vampire

For the first two seasons, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) explicitly laid out that she didn't want to be a vampire. There were close calls but it finally happened to her at the end of season 3 when Rebekah caused her and Matt to crash and go over Wickery Bridge.

The season wrapped on the cliffhanger that Elena had been healed earlier in the day with Damon's blood, so her death by drowning wasn't permanent. Elena woke up on the autopsy table, setting the stage for her future as a vampire.
