Chucky Show Trailer & Poster Tease New Spin On Franchise Lore

The latest poster and promotional teaser for SYFY and USA Network’s upcoming Chucky series offers a glimpse of a new spin on the horror franchise’s lore. More than three decades after Don Mancini’s Child’s Play was first introduced to audiences, the concept of a toy doll imbued with the soul of a deceased serial killer has taken on a life of its own. Chucky has long since ranked as one of the most unique and at times hilarious horror movie psychopaths.

But while the first three films in the series arguably tempered the ridiculousness of a doll being a brutal and foul-mouthed killer with classic horror elements, the subsequent films turned their focus specifically on Chucky, becoming more frivolous than ever in the process. Some fans resent the franchise being "hijacked," leaving it with straight-to-video releases and comical portrayals of a character that once elicited fear from audiences. However, with the upcoming release of the Chucky TV series, everything that made the earliest films what they were appears to be fuelling a new era for Mancini’s macabre creation. To date, everything that’s been seen of Chucky has indicated that the franchise’s tongue-in-cheek humor hasn’t completely been jettisoned, either.

The latest indication that Chucky will retain some of its past while moving forward into a new era comes courtesy of the official SYFY Twitter account. Both the teaser trailer and poster use some of the words from the voodoo chant that originally transferred the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray into the Good Guy Doll known as Chucky. Paired with Chucky’s familiar psychotic growl, the latest promotional materials will likely have fans even more excited for the series’ release on October 12. Check out the poster and teaser below:

After so many years of the franchise featuring Chucky as its most prominent aspect, the Chucky series seems to have a desire for something more. This time around, the battle against Chucky’s reign of terror will be led by teens – a stylistic choice that has worked well for other popular sci-fi/horror programs such as Stranger Things and Locke & Key. Teens will also be the focus in the upcoming and highly anticipated Ghostbusters sequel. It’s a smart move on the part of Mancini, as is offering the series the opportunity to explore real-world issues such as LGBTQ+ rights and bullying. With a focus on making Chucky accessible rather than sticking to the frankly tired novelty of a talking doll that kills, the series just might have more up its sleeve that some would initially give it credit for.

For now, at least, it does look like Mancini’s desire to pair what worked in the Child’s Play franchise with some new elements is something that can really work for Chucky. It’s still too early to say for certain if this will be the case, and ultimately it all comes down to how well the series is written and how engaging its characters are. Child’s Play fans will certainly be present and accounted for come October 12th, but what will really determine the show’s success is whether or not it can attract a healthy enough number of new viewers.
