If the Fast And The Furious series needs a way to reintroduce Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs, having him chase after John Cena's Jakob Toretto is the perfect opportunity. While Johnson fronted action movies in the 2000s like The Rundown or Doom, he never quite scored a major hit. It wasn't until his supporting turn as Agent Luke Hobbs in 2011's Fast Five that his film career blossomed. Hobbs was the perfect Fast And Furious antagonist, with the Diplomatic Security Service agent pursuing Dom and his crew like a Terminator.
Both the sequel and Johnson's Fast Five performance were praised, with the actor soon scoring big hits outside of the franchise too. Johnson appeared in every main entry until 2017's The Fate Of The Furious, where it became clear there were behind-the-scenes tensions between the star and Vin Diesel. The character was later spun off into Hobbs & Shaw, which paired him with Jason Statham's antihero. It currently appears Johnson has zero plans to rejoin the cast for the final two Fast And The Furious sequels, though plans are in place for Hobbs & Shaw 2.
While the feud between Johnson and Diesel doesn't appear to have eased, it would be strange if Hobbs never reappeared in another Fast & Furious. Since Hobbs is technically retired from the DSS, he would need a compelling reason to run into Dom's crew again, and the solution might be for the character to chase down Jakob Toretto. F9 revealed Dom and Mia had an estranged brother, with John Cena's Jakob having become a covert operative turned ruthless mercenary in the years since they lost track of him. He ends F9 on the run after being given a second chance by Dom, but if the authorities want him found, Hobbs would be the best man for the job.
Hobbs is not only considered a legend in his field, he has a history running down fugitive members of the Toretto clan. While the spinoffs are intended to be separate from the mainline entries, it feels like a Hobbs & Shaw 2 dealing with the latter's messy "Justice for Han" situation, and the former hunting down Jakob has potential. There's also just the appeal of seeing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and John Cena - two WWE icons - brawling with each other on the big screen, which would surely be enough to sell tickets on its own.
Fast And The Furious 10 could also deal with this story, with Dom forced to either help or hinder the hunt for his troubled brother. Given the lingering bad blood between the stars, however, if Dwayne Johnson did return for a main entry, the screentime between Hobbs and Dom would likely be limited. Family - and emotional family reunions - are a major theme of the Fast And Furious saga, so it wouldn't feel complete if Johnson's Hobbs and Diesel's Dom didn't reunite and hug it out, and having the former chasing Jakob would be the best way to bring him on a collision course with the Toretto family.
