Ryan Reynolds Didn't Want A Deadpool Cameo In Free Guy

Free Guy leading man Ryan Reynolds has revealed he didn't want the film to feature a cameo from Deadpool. Reynolds is both the star and a producer of the upcoming comedy. Ahead of its August 13 release, he has already teased that Free Guy will be littered with film references, Easter eggs, and cameos.

Reynolds first played the loveable antihero Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) in 2016 in the action film of the same name. Since then, Deadpool 2 and a litany of Deadpool video shorts have cemented him as an iconic Marvel character who some may have expected to appear among Free Guy's promised cameos. Soon due to be released worldwide after the coronavirus pandemic pushed back its planned 2020 release, Free Guy is a sci-fi action comedy directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, This Is Where I Leave You, The Internship), starring Reynolds and Jodie Comer in the lead roles. Set in a Truman Show-like video game world, it follows an NPC (non-player character) named Guy (Reynolds) who accidentally discovers the truth about his reality as a simulated cog in the game machine. After teaming up with a programmer named Millie (Comer), Guy sets out on an adventure to save the game world from destruction by the evil Antwan (Taika Waititi).

Despite the promise of multiple cameos in Free Guy, however, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Reynolds said he never felt that Deadpool had a place in the new film, feeling the character wouldn't fit in:

For me, the thing that I love most about Free Guy is that we’re doing something that I think is very increasingly rare, and very hard to do in this current marketplace. Which is open a big blockbuster movie that’s based on nothing but an original idea. I mean, it really isn’t an IP, it’s not a sequel, it’s not based on a comic book, it’s not based on anything. It’s based on a concept and an idea that people are familiar with, which is the video game world. I love that we had that opportunity, so no, I never really felt like I needed to put Deadpool in. He wouldn’t really fit in there. We do have some massive surprises in the movie that are courtesy of getting to work at Disney. But yeah no, I never thought of putting Deadpool in there.

It's no surprise that audiences might have expected Reynolds' previous character to pop up in Free Guy at some point. As part of the film's unique tongue-in-cheek marketing campaign, a clip was released featuring Reynolds and Waititi's Marvel characters Deadpool and Korg reacting to the Free Guy trailer as if they were YouTubers. This playful short naturally led to speculation that Deadpool would appear in the upcoming comedy, but it seems that won't be the case.

While Deadpool may not be on the list of characters to feature in Free Guy, Reynolds has set audiences up to expect plenty of Disney-specific Easter eggs. These were likely a later addition to the film, which originally began development at 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the studio and rebranded it as 20th Century Studios. Nevertheless, with all of these and plenty of video game references to boot, Free Guy is already lining up to be a jam-packed and fun-filled summer blockbuster.
