Shining Vale Images Give First Look At Courteney Cox’s New Horror Show

The first images from Courteney Cox’s upcoming Starz series Shining Vale have arrived, showcasing the former Friends alum’s upcoming horror-comedy project. Though the 1990s comedy zeitgeist arguably belonged to Cox and her Friends co-stars, by 1996, Cox had taken a chance on branching out into the teen slasher genre. The end result was a pivotal role as cheesy tabloid reporter Gale Weathers in Wes Craven’s beloved Scream franchise.

Fast forward twenty-five years and Cox’s past associations with both Friends and the Scream franchise have reached something of an iconic status. The recent Friends reunion gave fans a suitable chance to see their favorite characters back together for the first time in 17 years, and 2022 will see Cox return to the role of Weathers in the upcoming Scream 5It seems that the 57-year-old has a penchant for horror and comedy - which when done well, makes for some genuinely engaging entertainment. But while many Friends fans want nothing more than to see the cast of the series reform for one last season, Scream fans have the distinct privilege of watching Cox’s pick up where she left off in 2013’s Scream 4.What’s more, for those who love her ability to mix comedy and horror, her latest series is a perfect fit.

Cox will star in the upcoming Starz series Shining Vale, which focuses on washed up writer Patricia Phelps (Cox) who moves her family from the city to a small town. But after setting her family up in a big old house with a history, Phelps begins to question incidents within the home as well as her own sanity. Thanks to Bloody Disgusting, the first images from the series can be seen below, along with a detailed synopsis of what’s in store for viewers:

“Patricia “Pat” Phelps (Cox) is a former “wild child” who rose to fame by writing a raunchy, drug-and-alcohol-soaked women’s empowerment novel (a.k.a. lady porn). Fast forward 17 years later, Pat is clean and sober but totally unfulfilled. She still hasn’t written her second novel, she can’t remember the last time she had sex with her husband (Kinnear), and her teenage kids are at that stage where they want you dead. She was a faithful wife until her one slip-up: she had a torrid affair with the hot, young handyman who came over to fix the sink while Terry was at work. In a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, she and Terry cash in all their savings and move the family move from the “crazy” of the city to a large, old house in the suburbs that has a storied past of its own. Everyone has their demons, but for Pat Phelps, they may be real.”

In addition to Cox, Shining Vale stars Greg Kinnear (The Stand), Judith Light (The Politician) and Mira Sorvino (American Crime Story). The series is the brainchild of Sharon Horgan, whose brilliant comedic work is well known to audiences in the United Kingdom, but slightly less so in North America. Alongside comedian Rob Delaney, Horgan is arguably best known for co-creating and co-starring in Catastrophe, but her prolific output continues to provide audiences with a sardonic and downright hilarious comedic aptitude. From the sounds and looks of it, Shining Vale has a macabre tone that could potentially elevate the laughs in a big way.

There’s no doubt that horror comedy is a genre that isn’t exactly hugely popular among mainstream TV viewing. This shouldn’t be taken as evidence that Shining Vale has an uphill climb before it, however. With Cox on board as the program’s lead, plenty of fans will be drawn to the series, and Horgan’s comedic stylings can easily offer a reason to return for more. In addition to this, the series sounds downright intriguing. An official release date for the series has yet to be announced, but should be forthcoming.
