The Only Two Survivors Of The Final Destination Franchise (So Far)

The Final Destination franchise insists one can't cheat Death, and to that end, only two characters have survived the films so far, for now anyway. As far as structure goes, the Final Destination movies are basically slasher flicks, albeit without the usual masked killer. In the place of someone like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers is Death itself, the literal force behind each and every demise on Earth. Needless to say, a human being trying to fight against such a force has very low odds of winning.

The only edge the characters in the Final Destination movies have are the opening premonition sequences, in which the main protagonist experiences a terrifying vision of some kind of mass casualty event, but comes back to reality with just enough time to get out alive and save a few other people. The exact reasons these premonitions happen remain nebulous, even after five films, as the only attempted explanations - via Tony Todd's William Bludworth - really don't make any logical sense.

At the same time though, Final Destination fans unabashedly come back to these movies again and again not for the intricate plots, but for the exceedingly gory and creative methods that Death employs to off those who escape their intended fate. Several of the Final Destination movies end with every single character getting killed, and other rare survivors tend to die offscreen between movies. The only two exceptions so far are Final Destination 2 heroes Kimberly Corman (A.J. Cook) and Thomas Burke (Michael Landes).

While Alex Browning, who had the Final Destination franchise's original deadly premonition, did survive the first movie, he's revealed to have been killed offscreen by a falling brick prior to Final Destination 2. His friend/love interest Clear Rivers returned for the sequel, but was one of the last to die. Final Destination 3, 4, and 5 all end with a closing disaster that kills off the remaining cast. That leaves Kimberly and Thomas from Final Destination 2 as the franchise's sole survivors. Kimberly of course had the central premonition in the sequel, while Thomas was a cop who also survived the massive car wreck after being meant to die.

One thing worth noting about this though is that a text extra on the home video release of Final Destination 3 asserts that Kimberly and Thomas did in fact get killed off between films, keeping up the franchise's pattern. Their method of alleged death was quite grisly as well, with both getting caught inside a wood chipper. However, it's unclear if this is officially meant to be canon, as it's not mentioned in any of the actual films. Plus, it's also unclear if any of the movie's screenwriters signed off on that particular extra feature. With that in mind, Kimberly and Thomas remain the only Final Destination characters to beat Death for good.
