Loki's Trailer Confirms A New MCU Power For God Of Mischief

The trailer for Loki confirms that Tom Hiddleston’s character will be brandishing a new power in the MCU. The upcoming Disney+ series, which is scheduled for a June 2021 release, will explore what happened after the God of Mischief from the divergent timeline made off with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame.

Loki is sure to be an interesting project for Marvel, given that it’s the first one to put the focus on a villainous character. Of course, Loki’s MCU history makes being an anti-hero possible for the character, but the version of him in this story has a long way to go before he can be redeemed. That can happen though, but it may depend on what goes down when he meets the Time Variance Authority (TVA). It’s become apparent from the released footage for the Disney+ show that through Loki, it will give viewers a close look at alternate timelines, as well as new and existing corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As for what it will do with Loki himself, that remains unclear. As a major character who has appeared across multiple MCU movies, much about him is already known, but with the extra screen time, Marvel can always build onto his backstory and add new elements to his character.

The footage reveals that one addition to the MCU’s take on Loki will come in the form of a new ability. At the 1:48 mark in the Loki trailer, the villain can be seen shooting a green energy blast at an enemy, not unlike the way that Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) typically uses her powers in combat. In Marvel Comics, this isn’t unusual for a character whose offensive capabilities are mostly rooted in magic, and they’re quite common for sorcerers and wizards like Loki, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Enchantress, and more. Even so, it’s not something that the MCU’s Loki has done – or at least, it’s not a power he’s used on-screen yet.

Marvel’s official website confirms that he is capable of this, but it’s worth noting that thus far, Loki has only created energy blasts when wielding Gungnir and the scepter he received from Thanos [via Marvel.com]. He hasn’t formed them from his own hands yet, which presumably requires a great deal of magical expertise. Apparently, Loki doesn’t actually need a magical weapon to make use of these attacks in the MCU. That’s not surprising, given that he is accomplished sorcerer who learned much about magic from Frigga (Rene Russo).

Similar to the case with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Loki’s mastery of magic gives him access to all sorts of spells, so that’s likely the reason why Marvel hasn’t had a chance to put this ability on display yet. With getting his own six-episode series, Marvel will have numerous opportunities to adapt a long list of unseen spells from his arsenal in Loki. His adventure through the timestream may make Loki utilizing his power set to its full potential necessary to his survival.
