In Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity, one of the most successful Musou games to date, Calamity Ganon serves as the final boss fight in the storyline. Despite being one of the strongest and most unique bosses in the game, Hyrule Warriors reveals minimal information regarding his character.
However, considering the fact that he is present in multiple other Zelda games, there are some interesting facts about him that the player can easily miss due to having missed any of the previous games in the series, or simply not noticing the background information that the games provide about this big boss.
10 First Reference
Calamity Ganon's first appearance in the Zelda series happens in Breath Of The Wild. In his appearance there he is characterized as an ancient evil that returns yet again to Hyrule.
His arrival is being prepared through references to prophecies and rumors regarding his return. It is mentioned that there have been signs showcasing his upcoming resurrection. Although afraid, warriors were also ready to face him, hoping to do the same as their ancestors did and defeat him.
9 Playable Character
In Age Of Calamity, after unlocking all other characters when the player reaches the level 71-80 challenges tier, a new challenge is unlocked named Versus Calamity Ganon. The player is called to defeat three different bosses within a short time period.
The last of these bosses is Calamity Ganon, who when defeated becomes a playable character that can be used in other missions. It is important to keep in mind that this challenge is one of the hardest in the game, and being fast and efficient is essential for success.
8 Strongest Character
Despite being hard to unlock, Calamity Ganon is totally worth the effort. He is considered by many as the strongest playable character in the game. With exceptionally powerful normal attacks and unique combos that involve absorbing dark power, his gameplay is one-of-a-kind.
Playing Calamity Ganon gives the game a feeling of completeness where the player has seen and mastered everything that the game has to offer. Plus, completing any remaining sidequests with him will be a walk in the park.
7 First appearance
Although his first reference is in BotW, his first chronological appearance is within Age Of Calamity. Since the events of the latter game take place 100 years before BotW, it is possible that some of the references in BotW refer to Ganon's appearance in Age Of Calamity.
In a way, through Age Of Calamity, players are given the chance to see from first hand the tales of the ancestors that were praised in BotW.
6 The First Calamity
Other than his two appearances in BotW and Age Of Calamity, Ganon is also known to have made a third catastrophic appearance. 10,000 years before the events of BotW, Calamity Ganon spread havoc throughout Hyrule.
According to stories from both games, he was defeated by a huge army of mechanical protectors named Guardians, under the lead of four Divine Beasts. Hyrule was victorious and Ganon after his defeat was sealed beneath Hyrule Castle, until the events of the most recent game, Age Of Calamity.
5 Name
His name Ganon originates from the full name of Ganondorf, which, based on the legend, is due to his beast-like transformation. During the creation of the first game in the Zelda series, Ganon was also known as Bull Demon King Hakkai.
However, despite his multiple nicknames, the developers never revealed what lead them to choose the name Ganon. Also, in one of the oldest games in the series named A Link To The Past, Ganon is also addressed by his last name Dragmire.
4 Gerudo (Human)
Some of his names are not just alternate names or nicknames, but also refer to his transformation throughout the series. Ganondorf refers to his human-like Gerudo form, where he had two surrogate witch mothers named Twinrove Koume and Kotake.
Based on the tradition of the Gerudos, only one male is born every century. Due to Ganon being the male of his century, he received great power and was recognized by the King as his legitimate heir.
3 Not acknowledged
Despite having everything set up by being the only male and the King's heir, Ganondorf did not live up to his status. As other citizens of Hyrule revealed, Ganondorf often was caught stealing from women and children while also killing people.
Due to that, despite being the only male, some citizens refused to acknowledge him as the King's heir. The result of his actions was to not receive the full Triforce as was meant for him, but only the Triforce of Power. Nevertheless, even with only one part of the Triforce, Ganon managed to rise to power against those who opposed him.
2 Reincarnation
The main aspect that gave Ganon his strength was his ability to reincarnate. As mentioned in the game Skyward Sword, Ganon resembles the hatred incarnate of the demon king Demise.
From then onwards, his destiny is sealed as the demon of hatred destined to eternally reincarnate and wreak havoc across Hyrule. At the same time, his power works as a curse towards the heroes of Hyrule by leading them constantly towards calamities.
1 Final Form
His last form, Calamity Ganon, emerges when Ganon fully gives in to his hatred and gives up his human form.
Despite initially lacking physical form and being found hibernating, Calamity Ganon manages to gather the necessary strength through possessing and absorbing others. It is this power that gives him the exceptional strength of being the final boss and thus the ultimate threat of Hyrule, at the cost of losing his human form and embracing his demonic side.
