FAR: Lone Sails Sequel Changing Tides Announced For Multiplatform 2021 Release

The second installment in Okomotive's post-apocalyptic world, FAR: Changing Tides will take players on a pirate adventure unlike any ever seen in gaming. Now under the banner of Frontier Foundry, Okomotive will produce the sequel to its first and only game. Changing Tides will be a follow-up to the studio's first game, FAR: Lone Sails, a side-scrolling action-adventure game.

FAR: Lone Sails released in 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. The player controls the driver of a land/sea hybrid vehicle as they traverse the vast post-apocalyptic setting. The player operates the vehicle by operating various stations inside of it, such as filling the boiler with fuel and engaging the engine. Players are also faced with obstacles to overcome, such as fuel shortages, fires, and damages to the vehicle that must be solved before they can proceed. Lone Sails is notable for the fact that it has no enemies or combat opposing the player. However, the player character can die if they encounter certain hazards in the environment.

According to the new trailer from Frontier, FAR: Changing Tides will swap out the sandy dunes for sea waves. Players will now be charged with piloting a reclaimed ship. The hero, named Toe, is stranded amidst a drowned landscape with hopes of survival dwindling. The player will take Toe out onto the vast ocean in search of salvation. Along the way, Toe will learn more about the destruction that befell the world and their own home. Okomotive Lead Designer and Co-Founder, Don Schmocker, pledged to tell "a different, but complementary tale," that fans of the original will find fresh, yet familiar. Schmocker also assured fans of Lone Sails that Changing Tides would retain the core side-scrolling gameplay and recognizable art style. Composer Joel Schoch will also return to compose the soundtrack for Changing Tides after his work on Lone Sails.

The trailer itself features Toe sailing atop his ship through vast desolate oceans and past ruined cities. It appears that at least some of the gameplay will take Toe onto dry land, no doubt venturing out to find supplies. Though the trailer features little footage of gameplay, the aura is still quite similar to Lone Sails.

It's quite encouraging to see smaller, but still-beloved games like Lone Sails live on with further entries. Indie games have seen a renaissance in recent years, with little-known titles such as Among Us and Valheim taking the gaming world by storm. Even though the odds of Changing Tides reaching that level of success are slim, it would still be quite remarkable to see this sequel become a smash hit.
