Kyra Sedgwick is set to direct the new film Space Oddity. This marks the Emmy-winning performer's sophomore feature directing gig after Story of a Girl in 2017. Sedgwick earned much acclaim for the latter, including a Director's Guild of America Awards nomination. Since then, she has directed television shows like Grace and Frankie, Ray Donovan, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which she also acted in.
Deadline confirmed that Sedgwick would direct Space Oddity, a screenplay by Rebecca Banner which made 2017's Black List. Kyle Allen (West Side Story), Alexandra Shipp (Tick, Tick... Boom!), and Madeline Brewer (Hustlers) are signed on to star in the romantic flick. The film, which begins production this month in Rhode Island, boasts a stellar conflict:
"Space Oddity tells the story of Alex (Allen) who, after giving up on Earth and deciding to leave it all behind for a one-way mission to Mars, develops an unexpected romance with Daisy (Shipp), the enigmatic town newcomer, which forces him to choose between an uncertain journey to the stars and an even more uncertain journey of the heart."
Sedgwick is pulling double duty, producing the movie with her partner Valerie Stadler under their banner Big Swing Productions. The Arlook Group's Jack Greenbaum and Richard Arlook, and Unique Features' Mickey Schiff round out the producing circuit. Executive producers include Bob Shaye, Ibrahim AlHusseini, JL Pomeroy, Anne Clements, and Resonate Entertainment's Brent Emery, Susan Cartsonis, and Suzanne Farwell.
Space Oddity seems to fall in line with Big Swing's mission to make stories bursting with heart and purpose. This is the first feature film from Sedgwick's production company, which she and her cohorts founded in 2018, though she'd worked as a producer long before then. Between her talents, the powerhouse producers, and the glittering ensemble they've assembled, Space Oddity certainly has the potential to be out of this world. The only question is: will they use David Bowie's song in the trailer?
