Sylvie’s Mother Line Hints At Her True Identity (Not Loki)

In Loki episode 3, "Lamentis," Sylvie tells Loki that she doesn't have any clear memories of her mother - and her true identity in the comics could explain why. Played by Sophia Di Martino, this Loki variant has cleverly evaded capture by the Time Variance Authority and appears bent on destroying the entire organization along with the sacred timeline. Egomaniac that he is, Loki is fascinated by her and by their similarities and differences.

Sylvie has repeatedly objected to being called a Loki, preferring to go by her own chosen name, though it hasn't yet been explained why she dislikes being called Loki so much. The Asgardian text on her sword, her Asgardian clothing and her casual reveal to Loki that she knew she was adopted all indicate that Sylvie has a similar backstory to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's main Loki. However, she also seems to have some major gaps in the her memory.

Whereas Loki has deep and detailed memories of being raised and taught magic by Frigga, Sylvie admits that she doesn't really remember her own mother, and that she's "just blips of a dream at this point." This could be because, as a recent promo for Loki revealed, Sylvie was taken away from her parents by the TVA when she was just a child. Another explanation, however, is that Sylvie doesn't remember her mother because she doesn't have a mother. In Marvel Comics, Sylvie was actually created by Loki as part of yet another plot to spread mischief. Sylvie was given false memories of a life growing up in Broxton, Oklahoma (the town where Asgard was recreated after it fell in the comics). After waking up one day with powers and believing she was Asgardian, she set out to join a superhero team as Enchantress.

Sylvie being created by Loki (or rather, by a Loki) would explain why she was apprehended by the TVA at such a young age. If she was never supposed to exist in the first place, then simply by being created she may have violated the sacred timeline. Sylvie has revealed to Loki that some of the things the TVA believes are lies; its staff members aren't beings who were created by the Time-Keepers, but variants who have had their memories wiped and been repurposed. Like Mobius and the other TVA agents, Sylvie could have been deceived about her true nature.

In Loki episode 2, it was revealed that Loki has been apprehended by the TVA more times than almost any other type of variant. If the TVA is an enemy of Loki across many different possible timelines, then perhaps one of the Lokis created Sylvie with the intention of sowing chaos and mischief among the TVA - and ultimately causing its downfall.
