10 Best Yu-Gi-Oh! Characters | ScreenRant

The Yu-Gi-Oh! anime accomplishes a rare feat; it creates a world brimming with dimensional characters. While it's easy to write off this show as just another kid's cartoon, the characters that inhabit the world of Yu-Gi-Oh! spring off the screen and captivate viewers. From the most heroic to the most villainous, they all have unique driving motivations, hidden secret pains, and deep connections to other characters that strongly impact them — some more apparent than others.

Ranging from the delightfully sweet but never hapless Yugi, to the enigmatic spirit Yami, to the ruthless Thief King Bakura, to the sharp-tongued Seto Kaiba, and more, Yu-Gi-Oh! presents some of the best, most fully-realized characters from any genre.

10 The Duel Monsters Steal The Show

Though there are too many cards to go through each one individually, the Duel Monsters themselves are a notable part of the show. Throughout the anime, the characters rely on and even deeply bond with their favorite cards, from Yugi's Dark Magician to Kaiba's Blue-Eyes White Dragon to Mai's Harpy Lady.

And, much like in the case of the characters, the cards have hidden depths. In the cases of the most prominent "monsters," the cards are mere vessels for spirits that serve as guides for those who play them. For instance, Yugi's beloved Dark Magician actually contains the soul of Mahad, who was one of the Pharaoh's sacred guardians in the ancient Egypt timeline.

9 Teá Is Not To Be Underestimated

Teá Gardner is a character who is integral to the Yu-Gi-Oh! world. Though she can be a bit overbearing, her intentions are always well placed. In many ways, the anime's central theme is friendship and found family, and no one embodies these ideals more wholly than Teá.

Though other characters sometimes see her as soft, she often reminds them not to mistake softness for weakness. Teá is proud of the emotion she invests in her friends and proud when that brings her tears, even as she fiercely fights to defend them in Yu-Gi-Oh!. Though she may not get as much development as some other characters, fans accompany her on her growth journey throughout the show.

8 Joey's Heart Is In The Right Place

Joey Wheeler is a great example of why no one should ever judge a book by its cover. Although early in the show, he seems like a scatter-brained jokester, as the case often is with Yu-Gi-Oh!, the layers are soon pulled back. In truth, Joey carries many weights with him. His main arc of the first season revolves around winning enough money for his sister, whom he was separated from for many years, to have a necessary operation.

Throughout the show, Joey matures and becomes a solid friend whom others know they can rely on. He goes from an immature caricature to a true leader, one who is ready to make hard decisions and put others before himself if necessary. His heart and goodness clearly drive him.

7 Yugi Is A Sweetheart

In shows that revolve around great action and big battles, there's a tendency to get caught up in how tough a character is. But Yu-Gi-Oh! wonderfully undermines these expectations by centering Yugi Mutou in its episodes. Yugi's design is formulated to make him seem unassuming. His friends tower over him, and he seems somehow younger than they are. On top of this, Yugi is always sweet and gentle; the show even reveals there's a true purity to his soul.

But despite this, he is the show's hero, and there is no one stronger than Yugi when it comes right down to it. With or without the spirit of the ring, Yugi has a strength of heart and mind and never hesitates to come to the aid of his friends or, in fact, his enemies. Though he doesn't have the snarkiest lines or the biggest muscles, there's no denying Yugi's real fierceness.

6 Marik Is As Convoluted Of A Foe As They Come

One thing Yu-Gi-Oh! is never afraid to do is to complicate its villains. Although for a time it seems like Marik Ishtar is just a hungry megalomaniac, obsessed with the power of Yugi's puzzle, it soon transpires that the truth is much more complex. Marik's family was tasked with protecting the Pharoah's secrets, but they had to make certain sacrifices to do this. Marik's father also cruelly forced him to undergo a ritual in the Pharaoh's name, which unleashed an evil force inside of him.

Driven by his pain and by revenge, Marik became heartless and cruel, but despite this, he still felt a connection to his sister and adopted brother. Throughout his arc on the show, he came to understand that the suffering he was causing was needless and transitioned instead to being an ally.

5 Mai Is Tough As Nails

Mai Valentine is an exceptional character. She is unapologetically herself and never apologizes for it. Though she protests letting others in at first, fearing it will make her weak, she comes a long way in understanding friendship.

Mai was alone for much of her youth and then found herself a woman in a largely male-dominated world. She is wary of the gang at first, except for Teá, to whom she is kind, showcasing the connection she feels to other women. But eventually, Mai realizes the others are not just going to give up on or harm her, and in turn, she begins to see them as friends.

4 Pegasus Is Not Just A Capricious Villain

Pegasus Crawford is the show's original bad guy. At first, he comes across as wholly evil, a capricious foe with nearly unlimited power and resources who does not really seem to follow much rhyme or reason in his action, and for this alone, he is a great character. But eventually, fans learn he is not just on the hunt for power but trying desperately to find a way to bring his lost love back to him.

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a show that reveals how crucial friendship and love are, but also how hurtful it can be to lose them. Flashbacks show a much more innocent Pegasus who is corrupted by pain and power beyond his control and allow the audience sympathy for him.

3 Thief King Bakura Has A Deeper Pain

If Pegasus is the show's original foe, the spirit of the Millenium Ring, Thief King Bakura, is its longest game. Throughout Yu-Gi-Oh!, the spirit of the ring emerges, again and again, always bringing with him little tastes of the evil to come. But it isn't until the final arc of the show that he really becomes centered as the villain.

Still, in true Yu-Gi-Oh! style, the audience learns that the evil of the Ring's spirit was born of another evil, a great massacre which only the Bakura survived. As ever, the show reflects on the idea that true evil is an illusion and that there is always more to the story than appears.

2 Yami (Atem) Is A Regal Presence

The mysterious presence of the puzzle, Yami's soul actually belongs to an ancient Eygptian Pharoah whose spirit was trapped in a magical item for many, many years. The spirit, however, has no memory of his time as Pharoah and spends most of the show searing for his true identity.

At first, inhabiting a body with Yugi is not a simple thing to do. The Pharoah is more ruthless than his sweeter counterpart, but Yami learns from Yugi over time and begins to embody his more regal self. Yami becomes a calmer presence, someone the whole team can rely on to assess difficult situations and find answers.

1 Seto Kaiba Is An Incredible Anti-Hero

Seto Kaiba is one of the best anti-hero characters ever. He toes the line of being villainous but never crosses a boundary that is so unforgivable it paints him as evil. By the same token, he never fully softens to the main group of friends, either. Instead, he remains fully himself throughout the show, and that's what makes him so great.

Kaiba is an icy character. He doesn't let anyone except his little brother Mokuba get close to him, and he believes only in what logic dictates to him that he should. Fans see how much Kaiba has sacrificed throughout his life, though, and how he chose to allow himself to forgo his own childhood and innocence to preserve that of his brother's. Though Kaiba does not shift much, fans do see him begrudgingly respect, and ultimately, deeply connect with the Pharoah Atem in Yu-Gi-Oh.
