Cyberpunk 2077 Water Freezes When You're On a Phone Call

A potential new glitch in Cyberpunk 2077 has been discovered. It appears as if water freezes its animation cycle when the player is engaged in a phone call. No other background animations, like neon signs, appear to freeze during a call. It's also possible that this is not a bug at all. Rather, it could be a measure to ensure a smooth framerate.

Since releasing in late 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 has gained a reputation for being an unfinished, unpolished game. It was plagued with performance issues, bugs, and other problems. It eventually was pulled from digital storefronts, with developer CD Projekt Red issuing refunds to disgruntled players. Cyberpunk 2077 even experienced malware attacks through the game's modding tools. While patches and fixes have addressed many issues, a sizable number of glitches still remain.

Reddit user ZARAtrusta_N-1 may have found a new glitch. A video they shared shows how Cyberpunk 2077's water seemingly freezes when the player character is on the phone. And, by "freeze" that does not mean the water turns to ice, although at least one commenter was surprised this was not the case. Rather, the water goes completely still when it previously ebbed and flowed. The water resumes its normal animation when the phone call ends. In the comments, ZARAtrusta went into more detail on why they believe it to be a glitch. They claim to have run around a city while using the phone and didn't notice any other freezes. Neon ads continued to run and trees would sway in the win. There is no video to back up this claim, however. At least one other commenter also claimed to have experienced the glitch prior to a recent patch.

Another commenter proposed that it was a measure to keep frame rates smooth. It's not too outlandish of a theory. Many games implement such measures on minor animations in order to keep a steady FPS. With the plethora of performance fixes, this might indeed be the case. Until there is concrete evidence, though, it remains nothing more than conjecture.

As far as glitches - especially ones for Cyberpunk 2077 - go, this one is fairly minor. It has no negative impact on gameplay. It's purely visual and would just be strange to see during normal gameplay. Considering that water in Cyberpunk 2077 is its own entity without physics, as pointed out in the video's comments, the FPS theory holds more water (pardon the pun). Intended or not, it's a reminder that Cyberpunk 2077 is not quite the epic, groundbreaking title that the developer dreamed it would be. Well, it is groundbreaking in some ways. Not even nature can freeze water that quickly.
