Warning: Spoilers ahead for F9!
Mia Toretto made her return to The Fast Saga in F9, proving she's a capable fighter like the rest of the group despite her presumed lack of experience on the frontlines. Jordana Brewster is an original member of the Fast & Furious franchise, appearing in the first movie as Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel) younger sister. With her involvement in F9, Mia has now appeared in six saga installments, but the character finally got her chance to shine.
Despite not being involved in her brother's crime spree, Mia remained supportive, seeing as he helped raise her after their father's death. Mia, who was a skilled driver like the rest of the Toretto family, struck up a relationship with Dom's enemy-turned-friend, Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker). However, this led Mia into becoming a love interest and side character who was left on the sidelines or kept off-screen altogether. This situation was amplified after Mia and Brian started a family, but F9 would change that pattern.
While Brian could no longer be featured in the primary story because of Walker's death, F9 found a way to bring back Mia for a critical role. Upon hearing of Dom's conflict with their brother, Jakob Toretto (John Cena), Letty contacted Mia. Instead of being kept away from the missions, Mia was put on the frontlines for the battle against Jakob and his associates. This was partly due to Brewster's request for more Fast & Furious actions scenes, which she was given. Aside from accompanying Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) to Tokyo, where they faced off in a brutal fight with henchmen led by Jakob's associate, Otto (Thue Ersted Rasmussen), Mia was involved with the action-packed sequences centered on stopping Otto's armored truck with magnetized vehicles. Again, Mia physically battled members of Otto's team, but her fighting skills shouldn't come as a surprise since she is a Toretto after all.
Though Dom helped raise Mia, she was also surrounded by her single father, Jack, and brother Jakob for much of her childhood. Losing both of her parents and Jakob's exile surely wasn't easy for Mia, but Dom taught her how to get by in life. Based on Dom's backstory and flashbacks presented in F9, it was always clear the Toretto men knew how to use their fists to prove a point. Seeing as the family was often involved in dangerous situations, especially after Dom fell into crime, he seemingly made sure Mia could protect herself. It's likely her father and Jakob did the same.
After Mia and Dom became adults, the Toretto family was still pulled into threatening situations. This time, however, she had Brian by her side. In addition to his past training as a cop, Brian had his own combat skills and never backed down from a fight. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to learn that Brian spent time training with Mia so she could go toe-to-toe with anyone. Even after Brian retired from his missions with Dom, it was still important that his family was protected. That said, Mia wouldn't hesitate in advancing her fighting skills if it meant guarding her two kids or other members of her family.
While Mia's numerous fighting scenes are a welcome change for The Fast Saga, hopefully, Brewster continues getting opportunities to show off her physical power. Based on F9's ending, the relationship between the Toretto siblings was mended, hinting at another reunion before The Fast Saga closes out after two more films. Mia will likely remain a primary character, allowing Brewster to show off more of her fighting skills.
