Shadow And Bone: 10 Show Characters Who Weren't In The Book

Based on the best-selling fantasy novel by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone is an exciting Netflix fantasy series. While the show follows its namesake novel to degrees, Shadow and Bone also incorporates parts of the larger Grishaverse series, which includes several novels and short stories such as Six of Crows and Seige and Storm.

When it comes to page-to-screen adaptations, creators will often borrow ahead from the larger world to tell the most captivating story possible. While some characters never appear in the pages of Shadow and Bone, the book, they certainly make themselves known in the show.

10 Prince Vasily (First Appeared In Seige and Storm)

The first prince of Ravka and rightful heir to the throne, Vasily Lantsov prefers to be a playboy socialite over being a leader. Far more interested in hunting trips and lazing about the palace than responsibilities to the kingdom, Vasily's arrogance is anything but harmless.

Though Vasily was mentioned in the Shadow and Bone novel, he doesn't make an appearance until the second book in the trilogy, Seige and Storm. His role in the Netflix series is a small one but explosive to the live-action version of the story.

9 Tante Heleen (First Appeared In Six Of Crows)

In the bowels of Ketterdam's West Stave lies a brothel called the Menagerie. Cruel and abusive, Tante Heleen is the owner of the establishment and also controls Inej through a contract based on their prior work together.

Tante is tall and slender and is often involved in shady, underhanded dealings with other criminal types around the city. She plays a part in the Shadow and Bone series on Netflix; however, she was nowhere to be found in the novel. Tante and the Menagerie don't show up in the literary world until the novel Six of Crows.

8 Pekka Rollins (First Appeared In Six Of Crows)

Pekka Rollins is the owner of several businesses and the leader of the Dime Lions, Ketterdam's most prominent gang. A powerful man who enjoys boasting about his accomplishments, Pekka is the object of Kaz Brekker's obsession for vengeance, though the former is unaware of this.

In the Netflix series, Pekka Rollins vies for the job of abducting the Sun Summoner only to have it swiped from beneath him by Brekker and his gang. In the books, Pekka doesn't appear in the Shadow and Bone trilogy and shows up first in Six of Crows.

7 The Nichevo'ya (First Appeared In Seige and Storm)

These nightmarish, shadowy creatures are created by the Darkling's magical abilities. Vicious and powerful, the Nichevo'ya wreak havoc on all those who cross their paths — purely at their master's command, of course.

The winged monsters can be seen briefly in the final episode of the series, but they didn't appear in the Shadow and Bone novel. Instead, the Nichevo'ya made their first appearance in Siege and Storm, the trilogy's second book, while Alina and Mal are on the run.

6 Arken Visser (Exclusive To The Show)

Also known as the Conductor on the Netflix show, Arken Visser is hired by Kaz Brekker and his crew to guide them through the Fold. Much to the gang's surprise, he does so using a train.

As the series unfolds, Arken joins the team in their plans to infiltrate the Tiny Palace and steal the Sun Summoner away from the kingdom for a large reward. Arken Visser does not appear in any books related to Shadow and Bone or the larger Grishaverse. This character exists solely in the Netflix series.

5 Matthias Helvar (First Appeared In Six Of Crows)

Matthias Helvar is a drüskelle from the country of Fjerda, a soldier and member of the Fjerdan army who see all Grisha as their enemy. Matthias is among the sailors who capture the Grisha heartrender Nina Zenik and attempt to make her stand trial and in Fjerda.

However, before this can happen, Matthias is left stranded with Nina, and the two agree to help each other survive the harsh conditions of the land they travel through. Matthias Helvar doesn't appear in the books until Six of Crows, and this story is told through flashbacks instead of in real time as it is on the show.

4 Nina Zenik (First Appeared In Six Of Crows)

A Corporalnik Grisha soldier from Ravka, Nina Zenik finds herself the prisoner of Fjerdan sailors aboard a ship bound for their homeland. Though she's told she will stand trial for being a Grisha, Nina knows such trials only end one way; with execution.

Shipwrecked and stranded, Nina must work with Fjerdan soldier Matthias Helvar to survive the land around her but soon, Nina and Matthias grow closer in one of the most intense romances from Shadow and Bone. Nina is, however, not a character in the Shadow and Bone book and first appears in Six of Crows.

3 Jesper Fahey (First Appeared In Six Of Crows)

Zemeni born Jesper Fahey is a sharpshooter and member of Kaz Brekker's gang, the Dregs. Part of the team that makes the trip across the Fold in order to kidnap the Sun Summoner, Jesper is a smooth-talking gunslinger with confidence in his skills.

Fiercely loyal to Kaz and the Dregs, Jesper plays an integral part in the Netflix series; however, the character does not appear in the books until the Six of Crows duology.

2 Inej Ghafa (First Appeared In Six Of Crows)

Also known as the Wraith, Inej Ghafa is a member of the Dregs, a Ketterdam gang led by Kaz Brekker. Smart, sly, and subtle, Inej acts as a spy for the gang, pulling off incredibly dangerous missions with ease. Though not yet a romantic couple, Shadow and Bone's Kaz and Inej share a deep bond on the show.

Captured by slavers at the age of fourteen, Inej eventually found herself under contract at the Menagerie. When Kaz recognized her abilities, he offered to pay off her contract in exchange for her spycraft. In the Netflix series, Inej plays a large role, though she doesn't appear in the books until Six of Crows.

1 Kaz Brekker (First Appeared In Six Of Crows)

The young leader of the Dregs, Kaz Brekker is a skilled thief and an expert liar, though he always honors any deal he makes. Kaz values information and will take any job, regardless of how difficult or likely to end in violence it is, if it means a big payoff.

A master of sleight of hand, Kaz always has an ace up his sleeve and often comes out on top, even when it seems all hope is lost. In the show, Kaz takes on the seemingly impossible task of capturing the Sun Summoner. While Alina is the main character in the show, Kaz is the main protagonist of Six of Crows. In a way, the live-action series acts as a prequel for Kaz and his gang.
