There is something about characters pushing back against their confinement and finding the loopholes that lead to their freedom that is so entertaining to watch. These sequences can happen in action movies, dramas, or even superhero movies, but the best stand out as unforgettable movies moments.

10 The Great Escape (1963)

Based on an incredible true story, The Great Escape is an ensemble adventure movie about a group of POWs during World War II who stage a daring breakout from a German camp. But instead of a few soldiers attempting to flee, they concoct a plan to sneak 250 men.

The movie does a terrific job making the planning and lead-up to the actual escape entertaining. So when the time comes for dozens of men to sneak through the constructed tunnels, the tension is unbearably high. While things don't go as planned, it makes for a thrilling sequence.

9 Watchmen (2009)

Before Zack Snyder stepped into the DCEU, he dealt with another dark group of crime fighters in Watchmen. When violent vigilante Rorschach is locked in prison, his colleagues decide to break him out.

The sequence is a wild and chaotic one, as Night Owl and Sil Spectre invade the prison during a massive riot. They fight their way through the angry prisoners and Rorschach proves these criminals don't intimidate him, as he calmly goes to collect his costume and deliver some vengeance.

8 Out Of Sight (1998)

Based on the novel by Elmore Leonard, Out of Sight is a smooth crime story featuring George Clooney in one of his coolest roles. He plays the bank robber and escaped convict Jack Foley, who prides himself for being smarter than the average criminal.

After learning that some of his fellow inmates have dug a tunnel to flee, Foley uses their failed escape attempt to his advantage. Stealing a guard's uniform, he crawls through the tunnel, pretending to be part of the search party and using the confusion to slip away.

7 The Count Of Monte Cristo (2002)

While The Count of Monte Cristo is a classic story of revenge, the 2002 movie version may be the most fun adaptation. It follows Edmond Dantes, who is betrayed by his friend and locked away in an island prison for life. But when he meets an older prisoner who is tunneling out, he sees an opportunity to get even.

Just as the tunnel is nearly complete, it collapses, killing the old man and robbing Dantes of his freedom. However, in a clever move, Dantes switches places with the old man's body. As the body is thrown into the ocean, Dantes is about to finally escape the island and swim to freedom, making for one of the best but underrated revenge thrillers out there.

6 The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Gustav is the charming protagonist at the center of Wes Anderson's masterpiece, The Grand Budapest Hotel. And while he seems like an unlikely person to thrive in prison, the hardened criminals take a surprising liking to him.

When the other inmates notice the guards refuse to inspect the sweets Gustav is sent, as they are too beautiful, they decide to use them to smuggle in some tools. Anderson's signature snappy editing and quirky humor are put to great effect showing that he is surprisingly effective with action sequences.

4 The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Despite being a movie that depicts the horrors and corruption that can occur in prison, The Shawshank Redemption is viewed as one of the most uplifting movies of all time. A lot of this has to do with Andy Dufresne's escape from prison.

After he suddenly vanishes from his cell, the Warden discovers a hole hidden under one of Andy's posters. The audience is then shown the patience and planning Andy put into making his escape, triumphantly winning back his stolen freedom.

3 X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014)

Quicksilver was never one of the most popular X-Men, but fans realized his potential with this incredibly fun sequence in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The speedster mutant is recruited to help Charles Xavier and Wolverine break Magneto out of prison and he ends up being the secret weapon.

The whole sequence is really a platform for Quicksilver to take the spotlight. He steals the movie for a brief moment as he speeds through the prison, causing mayhem. It culminates in his awesome slow-motion takedown of the guards while he listens to the song, "Time in a Bottle."

2 The Fugitive (1993)

While most people remember the iconic waterfall jump from The Fugitive, perhaps an even more thrilling sequence is the prison bus escape. While Richard Kimble is bring transported to a new prison, some of the other convicts attack the guards, causing the bus to crash.

To make the situation even worse, the bus lands on some train tracks. After Kimble heroically saves some of the injured guards and trapped prisoners, he manages to jump out, just as the train collides with the bus. It feels like Kimble earned the right to run after that incident.

1 Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014)

From the anti-gravity maneuver to the Quill bargaining for a fake leg, it is an energetic and hilarious scene. It also does a great job of allowing each of these characters to shine, while also showing their dynamics as a team.
