The Party Down revival is officially a go at Starz, with six of the original seven stars set to reprise their roles. The workplace comedy series follows the unenthusiastic employees of Party Down, a Los Angeles-based catering company, who sling hors d’oeuvres while dreaming of Hollywood success. Party Down debuted in 2009 and aired for two seasons before its cancellation in 2010 due to low ratings. The series has since garnered a cult following for its deadpan insights into industry culture and relentlessly funny navigation of the post-recession workplace.
At the center of the series is Henry Pollard (Adam Scott), a failed actor who resignedly returns to his former workplace at Party Down. His boss Ron (Ken Marino) is the only member of Party Down’s orbit without his hopes set on Hollywood, instead falling for the siren song of fast-casual eatery franchise ownership. Rounding out the ensemble cast is a motley crew of would-be writers, comedians, and performers. Many of Party Down’s cast members would go on to star on more commercially successful series, including Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex), Scott (Parks and Recreation), Jane Lynch (Glee), and Martin Starr (Silicon Valley).
Deadline reports that fans are getting a long-awaited limited series revival of Party Down, with the new installment set to include six episodes. Following a period of lengthy negotiations, producers were able to secure six original cast members for the revival: Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Megan Mullally, Jane Lynch, Martin Starr, and Ryan Hansen. Not returning is Lizzy Caplan, whose schedule couldn’t accommodate the Party Down production. She will be shooting the FX limited series Fleishman Is in Trouble. Also returning are co-executive producers Rob Thomas, John Enbom, Paul Rudd, and Dan Etheridge.

Per series creator Rob Thomas, talk of a third season began at Vulture Festival’s Party Down reunion in 2019. The main roadblock was accommodating the entire cast’s schedules, which Thomas said at the time “may require trigonometry.” The cast had briefly reunited over the years, including in an episode of Children’s Hospital starring Megan Mullally, but the announcement from Starz marks the first official, scripted Party Down episodes since 2010.
Caplan’s absence will surely loom large over the new episodes; the romance between Scott’s Henry and Caplan’s Casey Klein is a recurring plot element over Party Down’s two seasons. That said, the show is historically adept at subbing in new cast members in the face of scheduling conflicts. When Jane Lynch left at the end of season 1 to star in Glee, the gap was filled by the able talents of Jennifer Coolidge, with Megan Mullally ultimately replacing Lynch in season 2. It remains to be seen how the writers will explain Casey’s absence, as no plot details have been revealed yet, or if any Party Down guest stars or minor characters will make an appearance in the limited series. Fans can look forward to more info on the upcoming Party Down episodes as shooting draws near.
