One of Euphoria’s cast members, Angus Cloud, has explained why the popular season 2 ship between Fezco and Lexi works as well as it does. Fezco and Lexi is a dynamic that no fan saw coming as they were two underrated characters from the hit HBO series’ first season. Both Fezco and Lexi shot to the top of many fan-favorite lists once Euphoria season 2 premiered, due to expanded storylines and more of a focus on them within the show’s story.
Euphoria follows drug-addict teenager, Rue (Zendaya), and her group of friends and associates, all of whom are dealing with their own issues. The show is well known for its violence, nudity and depiction of drug use, following in the footsteps of Degrassi to become a teenage show that authentically depicts some high school experiences not commonly shown in media. Lexi Howard (Maude Apatow), Rue’s former best friend, cautions her against her drug use and tries to help her when she spirals out of control; while Fezco (Angus Cloud) has been Rue’s drug dealer as well as a makeshift family member for the struggling character.
Cloud and Apatow both spoke about the Euphoria pairing in an interview with Bustle. Apatow spoke to Cloud’s character, saying that it might surprise people how “kind” and “thoughtful” Cloud is in real life despite how he portrays Fezco. Cloud also addressed the already-existing friendship between he and Apatow during the filming of both seasons. He emphasized that both actors were very game for the idea of a romantic storyline, saying, “We were like, alright, let’s get it.” Check out Cloud’s full quote here:
”We were like, alright, let’s get it. We were already friends and sh*t, so it was like, ‘It’s lit’… We had chemistry as friends already in real life, which I bet is part of the reason Sam thought we would connect on screen.”
The few interactions between Lexi and Fez in the second season so far have been simple and brief, but thrilling. The characters do have a noticeable chemistry, proving that Cloud’s observation about his relationship with Apatow is right on target. The two are wrapped up in unique and compelling storylines not typically explored in Euphoria, so a pairing between them, which focuses on the softer side of high school romance, could wind up to be surprisingly chaste and fantastical for the gritty HBO show.
Fans have already sparked more to Lexi Howard this season, and the pairing between Fezco and Lexi was recently celebrated on Twitter. If the show continues to explore the dynamic, it could mean something much sweeter and more simple for a show that wears its edge and drama on its sleeve. Audiences will just have to stay tuned in to Euphoria, which airs Sundays on HBO, to see how this intriguing dynamic plays out.
