The iPhone 14's Punch Holes May Be Bigger Than Expected

The certainty about Apple adopting a new design for the iPhone 14 series is getting stronger each day, and while there are already mockups floating around the web that portray this change in design, new info suggests that they may be inaccurate in terms of the dimensions. Additionally, Apple will reportedly remove the notch from the Pro models of the next-generation iPhones scheduled to arrive in the second half of 2022.

The race for a full-screen/all-screen/full-view display that covers practically all of the front of the phone has led manufacturers to adopt various design solutions. With the top bezel, which usually houses components such as cameras and sensors, gone, phone companies have come up with exciting ways to find a way to keep these components. Some of the solutions that have made it to the market include a slider design, pop-up cameras, notches, punch holes and under-display camera technology.

The new iPhone design is expected to be two cutouts — a circle and a pill — on the screen. These cutouts will replace the familiar notch that has appeared on the iPhone since 2017. However, while leaks have portrayed the size of the holes as being small, it seems that won't be the case. YouTuber, Jon Prosser, revealed in an episode of Front Page Tech that the size of the holes is considerably bigger than initially believed. As shown in the video, a schematic of the iPhone 14 with the correct size of the punch holes was first posted on Weibo. However, he stated that he could "independently verify" that the schematic is correct.

From the images, it is clear the holes are much bigger, almost double in the case of the pill and about 2.5x in the case of the circle. It is expected that there will be polarizing views — with some favoring the new design and others preferring the notch — considering the cutouts are much bigger than previously thought. Those who don't like the new style will have the option to choose an iPhone with a notch this year, as the new design will be exclusive to the pro models. However, that won't be the case in 2023, as a recent report said Apple would forego the notch on all models.

Apart from this new design on the front, other reported details are upgraded cameras, including a new 48MP camera for the iPhone 14 Pro. In addition, the iPhone 14 series should also come with a new and more powerful chipset believed to be called the A16 Bionic, and it will be paired with a 5G modem from Qualcomm.
