Hawkeye Was Secret Invasion’s Darkest Skrull Impostor

During the preparation for their Secret Invasion, the Skrulls kidnapped and took the place of many Earth heroes, including Clint Barton, Hawkeye, and Bobbi Morse, Mockingbird. Bobbi was actually one of the first heroes to be replaced, during her tenure in the West Coast Avengers. Trapped on a Skrull planet to extract information from her, her fate was even more tragic as her Skrull jailer, who impersonated her husband Clint, actually developed twisted feelings for her.

Hawkeye and Mockingbird were among the founding members of the West Coast Avengers, the first "spinoff" Avengers team. This Avenger couple was also the heart and soul of the group until the events of a tragic time-traveling mission created a rift between them. After being estranged for a while, it seemed like Bobbi wanted to reconcile with Clint, but the truth was much darker. Mockingbird had been replaced by a Skrull impostor, who was unaware of the fact that Bobbi was actually about to file for divorce. That Skrull was later killed during the West Coast Avengers' final mission, but her true identity was never revealed. Hawkeye and the rest of the team mourned Bobbi's loss, and the Avengers of the West Coast disbanded shortly afterward.

Meanwhile, the real Bobbi was an unaware prisoner on a Skrull planet, trapped in a simulation of her life as a West Coast Avenger, as revealed in New Avengers: Reunion #3 - by Jim McCann, David López, and Daniele Rudoni. The Skrulls wanted to extract as much information on Earth and its protectors as they could, but Bobbi ended up discovering the truth, leading to her escape. For a long time, she was a runaway on an alien planet, and to make things worse the Skrull impersonating Hawkeye became obsessed with her, actually allowing her to escape to play out a twisted game of cat and mouse. The darkest part of the story is that Bobbi already suffered a similar kind of abuse. During the fated time-traveling mission with the West Coast Avengers, the Wild West vigilante called Phantom Rider also developed an obsession for Bobbi, kidnapped her, and drugged her with a "love potion". When Bobbi finally snapped out of it, she killed the Phantom Rider in cold blood, which Hawkeye could never forgive.

Something similar played out with Bobbi's Skrull tormentor. She killed him, but the damage was already done. When Mockingbird comes back to Earth during Secret Invasion, she has a hard time reestablishing a relationship with Hawkeye, even when they have to work together. This is not only because of the torture at the hands of the Skrulls, but also because Clint can't get over the fact that Skrull Bobbi forgave him before her death, so he believes that the real Bobbi can do the same. Mockingbird's first kidnapping broke her marriage with Hawkeye, but the actions of the Skrulls created an even wider rift. "Every time I see you, I see the man I was ready to divorce," Bobbi says to Clint in New Avengers: Reunion, "...and the Skrull version of you I killed."

Bobbi Morse has had a difficult life but she was always able to get back on her feet and Mockingbird became a successful Avenger, a super soldier, and S.H.I.E.L.D. operative. Her time as the prisoner of an abusive Skrull impersonating Hawkeye remains one of Secret Invasion's darkest moments, and one that most fans missed.
