Tom Hiddleston Told Charlie Cox To Sneak Into No Way Home Screening

Tom Hiddleston encouraged Charlie Cox to attend a screening of Spider-Man: No Way Home to hear the audience react to his Daredevil cameo. Cox's MCU journey has been long and winding, and it seems like it's far from over. He first made his debut in the franchise with the Marvel Netflix show Daredevil, where he played lead character Matt Murdock. Cox was also one of the primary stars of The Defenders, a series that united all the leads of Marvel's Netflix library. However, despite immense fan support, the 2018 cancellation of Daredevil put Cox's future as the blind vigilante on hold.

Then, Spider-Man: No Way Home happened. Throughout the film's production and in the lead-up to its release, Cox was heavily rumored to make another appearance as Matt. Like Andrew Garfield, he denied it, but also like Garfield, there were leaks that hinted at his role. No Way Home then premiered in December and revealed Matt to be Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) lawyer for the aftermath of Mysterio's (Jake Gyllenhaal) reign of terror. Since then, Cox has confirmed he knows there's something new coming for Daredevil in the MCU, though it isn't yet clear what that something is.

Leaks aside, Cox's No Way Home Daredevil cameo was kept tightly under wraps before the film premiered. Cox himself was careful about who he told, though there was one person he was able to reach out to early on: Fellow MCU alum Tom Hiddleston. Speaking to ComicBook.com about his AMC+ series Kin, Cox revealed he called Hiddleston to discuss his No Way Home role. It was during that call when Hiddleston advised him to sneak into a screening so that he could enjoy the audience's reaction to his cameo. Cox said:

"One of my first phone calls, when I found out I was coming back, even though I was trying not to tell anyone, I was living in fear for two years of it being leaked, it was this big surprise. When I was on the set I was wearing the thing everywhere, blah, blah. One of my first phone calls, and I knew I could tell him because I also knew he knew, was Tom Hiddleston, he's one of my best friends.

"He said to me, and he was shooting Loki at the time, so he'd spoken to those guys, and he knew, and they knew we were friends, and all that stuff, so he knew about it. I spoke to him, and he said to me, 'Whatever you do, when the film comes out, you've got to sneak into the back of a theater, because it will go crazy.' And I remember thinking, 'No it won't.' It'll be nice to be there, but I think he's thinking what it would be like for Loki to appear in that moment, where the Loki fan base is unlike anything I've ever seen in my life."

Cox was eventually persuaded to slip into a Spider-Man: No Way Home showing, but it sadly didn't go the way others promised. Cox said the theater was dead quiet for his cameo, even though other showings had rapturous responses. It's a shame the experience wasn't as he had hoped, but hopefully now he can see that there are many Marvel fans who are happy he's back, even if they evidently weren't at that particular screening.

Though they are both MCU stars, Cox and Hiddleston occupy vastly different areas in the franchise. Interestingly, the two starred in the play Betrayal in 2019 alongside Zawe Ashton, who will make her own MCU debut next year in The Marvels. Hiddleston has season 2 of his Disney+ series Loki to look forward to, as well as a rumored role in May's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As for Cox, Spider-Man: No Way Home doesn't yet seem like the end of the line for him, but fans will have to wait and see exactly what is next.
