Ant-Man's Future Avengers Are the Last Defense Against the Apocalypse

Warning: Contains spoilers for Avengers: Forever #3

On Earth-818, an apocalyptic world ruled by Herr Venom, a symbiote-empowered version of the Red Skull, the only heroes left are Tony Stark aka the Invincible Ant-Man and his group of future Avengers. In Avengers: Forever #3 - by Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, Cam Smith, Scott Hanna, and Guru-eFX - readers are introduced to each member of this ragtag team carrying the heavy task of having to save the world at all costs.

The Avengers are currently facing the most dangerous threat of their career. The Multiversal Masters of Evil, assembled by the Doom Supreme and Mephisto, are taking over one Earth after another, banding together to kill each planet's defenders before a "heroic age" can blossom. When a Deathlok, a soldier of the mysterious Avenger Prime, appears on Earth-616 and takes Robbie Reyes aka Ghost Rider to Earth-818, the two are captured and tortured by Herr Venom. Their only hope is that world's Tony Stark, who became Ant-Man rather than Iron Man, and his group of surviving Avengers.

Avengers: Forever #3 shows the team assembling before heading off to save the prisoners. Ant-Man is a brilliant inventor and archeologist with alcohol addiction who tries to save his world by finding powerful relics to turn into weapons, such as a Celestial gun. The Vision is a robot he put together as a lonely kid to literally build himself a friend. Moon Knight is Mariama Spector, a "one-woman global rebellion" and the "ultimate shadow soldier." Ben Grimm is the Infinity Thing, an astronaut who visited the stars to find something that could save his world, and came back transformed and possibly also transcended to a higher state of consciousness.

Wonder Man is perhaps the most interesting alternate version of an Avenger presented here. The original Simon Williams is a disgraced businessman who acquired ionic powers through an experimental procedure by Baron Zemo, joined the Avengers, and later became a Hollywood actor. Earth-818 Wonder Man is the survivor of a nightmarish reality show in which people are given superpowers and forced to fight to the death, putting an interesting new spin on the Simon Williams character.

Avengers: Forever is using the concept of the Marvel Multiverse to expand the role and significance of the Avengers. Earth-818, despite being a wasteland ruled by a tyrant, still has its heroes who keep the glimmer of hope alive. This means that despite the universe, the timeline, or how dire the reality is, there will always be an Avengers team to set things straight. To see Earth-818 Avengers will succeed in saving Ghost Rider and Deathlok, and overthrowing Herr Venom, readers should not miss Avengers: Forever #3, on sale now.
